Ngurah Rai Airport Becomes More Advanced with Facial Recognition System

Share This Post:

The international I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport in Badung Regency, Bali, has recently undergone technological enhancements, specifically the implementation of a facial recognition system. This upgrade, initiated by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham), aims to complement the immigration facilities at Bali’s largest airport.

As reported by Antara on Tuesday (2/1), Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasonna Laoly personally inspected the immigration inspection area equipped with the facial recognition identification system. “For immigration supervision and security, Immigration has adopted facial recognition identification technology,” stated Yasonna at Ngurah Rai Airport, Bali, on Tuesday (2/1).

He emphasized that this system is essential to support the new facility, which facilitates automatic immigration checks or autogates at the I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport. The use of autogates ensures a faster, more accurate, and efficient immigration inspection process while still prioritizing surveillance and security aspects through facial recognition technology.

Here are some key points about this technology

  • The facial recognition system will work in automation with the increasingly digitized immigration and visa process that the Indonesian government is moving towards.
  • The immigration inspection process will be faster, more accurate, effective, and efficient, without compromising monitoring and security aspects.
  • The system is already in place at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta Airport and has proven to be a huge success for both traveler and immigration teams.
  • So far, 30 auto-gates units have been installed at Ngurah Rai Airport, with work starting back in October 20231.
  • The auto-gates are set to be used by the first passengers this month once final systems checks have been completed.
  • Within the first quarter of 2024, the plan is to add another 50 auto gate units, bringing the total to 80 units installed across the international terminal.
  • Eventually, there will be 50 auto-gates in the international arrivals terminal and 20 devices in the international departures area.

It was mentioned that 30 autogate units have been installed at Ngurah Rai Airport since October 2023, with the goal of making them operational by January 2024. In the first quarter of 2024, an additional 50 autogate units are planned to be added, bringing the total to 80 units. This distribution includes 60 devices in the international arrival area and 20 devices in the international departure area.

The implementation of autogate is expected to streamline immigration checks without direct interaction with immigration officers. Suhendra, the Head of Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, explained that they have introduced a direct passenger photo capture scheme within the autogate operation. This feature aims to simplify verification with data from passports, visas, or residence permits.

Furthermore, they utilize the Passenger Profile Information System and the Immigration Alert Surveillance System as supplementary applications for immigration oversight. “We hope that this facility will positively impact the services provided to users, ensuring that travel to and from Bali becomes safer and more comfortable,” he added.
