Bali Introduces New Digital Payment System to Enhance Tourist Experience

Bali, one of the world’s most beloved travel destinations, has unveiled a cutting-edge digital payments system aimed at creating a seamless and cashless tourism environment for international visitors. Launched by Bank Indonesia on November 19, 2025, at the I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, the initiative is designed to simplify transactions and boost Bali’s standing as a tourist-friendly island.

The Indonesia Tourist Travel Pack (ITTP)

At the heart of this new system is the Indonesia Tourist Travel Pack (ITTP), a comprehensive solution for travellers to make hassle-free digital payments during their stay. The ITTP combines:

  • An Indonesian SIM card with local phone number and internet data access, enabling connectivity.
  • Chip-based electronic money, which is linked to a secure e-wallet for financial transactions.

This dual package allows tourists to easily use their smartphones to pay for services and goods using QR codes, integrating smoothly with Indonesia’s Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) payment system.

How the System Works

Using QRIS technology, visitors can scan QR codes presented at a variety of locations—including tourist sites, shops, hotels, and restaurants—to complete payments quickly and securely without needing cash. While cash remains accepted widely, the digital option provides convenience and speed, which is particularly appealing for travellers navigating unfamiliar currency or transport costs.

Bank Indonesia has also established a dedicated Tourism Information Center at the Bali airport. This center assists visitors in acquiring the ITTP and distributing the QRIS Nusantara Tourism Guidebook—a handy resource listing major attractions and businesses that accept digital payments. This guidebook ensures tourists can enjoy a smooth experience across the island’s diverse hospitality and retail sectors.

Supporting a Vision of a Cashless Bali

The digital payments system aligns with Indonesia’s broader financial modernization goals, including plans to redenominate the rupiah currency for easier numerical comprehension, although such changes remain on a longer timeline.

For travellers eager to explore Bali’s famous cultural and natural landmarks, such as Uluwatu Temple, Ubud Monkey Forest, Tanah Lot Temple, Mount Batur, and Tegalalang Rice Terrace, this system promises enhanced convenience in managing expenses.

Looking Ahead

Bali’s embrace of a digital payments ecosystem exemplifies the island’s commitment to improving the tourist experience by leveraging technology. While still maintaining accessibility for those preferring cash, this initiative places Bali at the forefront of modern tourism infrastructure in the region.

Visitors arriving at Bali Airport can expect faster transactions and a more connected travel experience, marking an important step toward the future of tourism in Indonesia.
