Over the weekend, locals and visitors alike were captivated by the rare sighting of a sperm whale breaching near the coast of Pemuteran, marking an exceptional event in this tranquil part of the island.

The striking footage of the sperm whale was captured by a local fisherman and quickly went viral across social media platforms. While dolphins are commonly observed in the northern waters, the appearance of a large whale is an extraordinary event for Bali’s northern coast. Marine science experts, including Gede Iwan Setiabudi from Bali’s Ganesha University of Education (Undiksha), commented on the rarity of the occurrence.
“The waters north of Bali are generally a dead end and are only open from the east. It’s highly likely these whales are simply passing through, not following any fixed migration route,” explained Setiabudi. He noted that while sperm whales frequent Indonesian waters, they are predominantly seen in regions such as the Sawu Sea, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua. Their appearance in northern Bali is irregular and unpredictable, influenced by oceanic currents and environmental conditions rather than established migratory paths.
Possible Reasons Behind the Whale’s Presence
Experts suggest several factors that might have led the sperm whale close to Pemuteran. Setiabudi mentioned the current storm season as a potential cause, alongside other influences such as underwater sonar interference or sudden temperature changes, which can disrupt normal whale behavior and separate individuals from their pods.
Despite these unusual circumstances, the behavior exhibited by the whale was typical. The whale’s characteristic fluke-up tail dive and brief stationary floating—used to catch its breath before a deep hunt—were seen in the footage, reassuring experts about the animal’s condition.

He anticipates that the award will boost tourism, benefiting the local economy and reinforcing cultural and ecological preservation.
