Sangeh Monkey Forest Enhances Tourist Safety Measures After Tragic Tree Collapse
Ubud, Bali – December 10, 2025 — The Sangeh Monkey Forest, a prominent tourist attraction near Ubud, Bali, is intensifying its safety protocols following a tragic incident last week that resulted in the death of a staff member and injuries to another. The forest, famed for its temple complex and free-roaming long-tailed macaques, has temporarily closed to the public as it upgrades its disaster preparedness and visitor security measures.
Tragedy Strikes During Extreme Weather
On Wednesday, December 3rd, a severe weather event caused more than 30 mature trees within the Sangeh Monkey Forest grounds to fall. The disaster devastated almost 80 percent of the temple area, according to IB Putu Mas Arimbawa, Head of Abiansemal District. The trees, some reaching 50 meters in height and 1.5 meters in diameter, were brought down by extreme winds and a sudden vortex phenomenon described by eyewitnesses.
The calamity claimed the life of 51-year-old staff member IB Nyoman Suamba, who was crushed when a temple pavilion collapsed after a tree fell on it. Another employee, 47-year-old Nyoman Rasna, sustained a broken arm during the incident. Both were on duty monitoring the monkeys at the time the weather deteriorated rapidly.
Focused Efforts to Prevent Future Incidents
In the aftermath, Sangeh Monkey Forest management, led by Ida Bagus Gede Pujawan, has committed to a comprehensive review and enhancement of safety protocols. The attraction, which caters to a growing number of international and domestic tourists, remains closed for cleanup and improvements but aims to reopen on Thursday, December 11th, in time for the holiday season.
Pujawan emphasized existing standard operating procedures that required evacuation during rain and announced additional measures, including the installation of a manual alarm system designed to inform and evacuate guests promptly when hazardous weather conditions arise. He pointed out the unique risk posed by the forest’s nutmeg trees, whose roots spread sideways rather than deeply, increasing vulnerability during storms.
“Previously, we would evacuate guests if it rained,” Pujawan explained. “Moving forward, we will implement coded alarms so that visitors can be immediately directed to safety. This tragic event has shown us the need for faster and more effective communication.”
Community Mourning and Commitment to Safety
The staff and local community continue to mourn the loss of IB Nyoman Suamba, whose sudden death has deeply affected those who work at the forest. Pujawan shared the emotional details of how Suamba lost his life after attempting to retrieve a forgotten phone charger just as the pavilion collapsed. The disaster unfolded in seconds, leaving staff uncertain about where to seek refuge.
“We hope to learn from this disaster and collaborate closely with the traditional village head to strengthen regulations ensuring the safety of everyone,” Pujawan said.
Other Bali Monkey Attractions Remain Open
While Sangeh Monkey Forest remains closed for these critical improvements, other popular monkey forest destinations in Bali continue to welcome visitors. The Ubud Monkey Forest Sanctuary and Alas Kedaton Monkey Forest in Tabanan Regency are fully operational, providing tourists with alternative experiences during Sangeh’s temporary closure.
