Floods in Bali Claim Nine Lives, Disrupt Travel, and Affect Hundreds Amid Heavy Rains
Bali, Indonesia – Severe flooding triggered by continuous heavy rainfall has resulted in the deaths of at least nine people and impacted around 600 residents on Indonesia’s popular holiday island, Bali. The extreme weather, which began Tuesday evening and continued into Wednesday, has severely disrupted travel and daily life in the region.
The disaster struck Bali’s capital, Denpasar, and surrounding areas, with five casualties reported in Denpasar alone, according to Abdul Muhari, spokesperson for Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency. Additional fatalities occurred in the districts of Jembrana, Gianyar, and Badung, while two people remain missing amid ongoing search operations.
The persistent downpour caused widespread flooding that inundated homes and blocked key roads, complicating rescue efforts and travel. Approximately 200 individuals have been evacuated to safer locations, including local schools and mosques, as their residences remained submerged under water.
The floods also led to the collapse of two buildings in Denpasar, compounding the emergency situation. I Nyoman Sidakarya, head of Bali’s search and rescue agency, confirmed the structural damage and highlighted the challenges faced by rescue teams.
This natural disaster comes during a crucial period for Bali’s tourism sector, which relies heavily on smooth transportation and infrastructure. The flooding has not only endangered lives but also disrupted travel plans for both locals and visitors in this busy tourist hotspot.
