Bali Floods Claim Nine Lives, Affect Hundreds, and Disrupt Travel in Popular Indonesian Tourist Destination

Severe flooding triggered by continuous heavy rains between Tuesday evening and Wednesday has resulted in at least nine deaths and impacted approximately 600 people across Bali, Indonesia’s renowned holiday island. The natural disaster has also caused significant disruption to travel and daily life, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

The Indonesian disaster mitigation agency spokesperson, Abdul Muhari, reported that five fatalities occurred in Denpasar, the island’s capital, due to the sudden floods. Additional casualties were recorded in several other regions: Jembrana, Gianyar, and Badung, where four more people lost their lives. Authorities are still searching for two individuals who remain missing in the aftermath.

Due to the ongoing flood conditions, nearly 200 affected residents have been evacuated and temporarily sheltered in local schools and mosques, as their homes remain submerged. The disaster also caused structural damage, with two buildings collapsing in Denpasar, according to I Nyoman Sidakarya, head of Bali’s search and rescue agency.

The flooding has severely impacted transportation, especially around Denpasar. Access to Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali’s primary gateway for tourists, has been restricted. Only trucks were permitted to use certain flooded roads, resulting in major traffic jams. Social media footage circulated widely, showing substantial flooding on major thoroughfares and resulting gridlock that hindered movement across the island.

The local government and emergency services continue rescue and relief operations as they work to manage the immediate effects of this unexpected disaster. Authorities are urging residents and visitors to exercise caution and stay updated on weather and travel advisories as the situation develops.

As Bali grapples with these challenges, the natural disaster highlights the vulnerability of the island’s infrastructure to extreme weather events during the rainy season, further stressing the importance of preparedness in this popular tourist destination.
