Tragic Snorkeling Boat Capsize off Bali Claims One Life
DENPASAR, Indonesia (AP) — A tragic incident occurred off the coast of Bali on Friday when a snorkeling boat, named the Sea Dragon, capsized in rough waters, leading to the death of one woman and injuries to two others. The boat was carrying 13 people, including 11 Australian tourists.
Incident Details
The Sea Dragon was en route from a port in Bali to Nusa Penida, a sought-after destination known for its stunning underwater scenery. According to local police spokesperson Agus Widiono, the boat encountered unexpectedly high waves while navigating through Kelingking waters.
Reports indicate that while the group was actively engaged in viewing the marine life, a large wave struck the vessel, resulting in the ejection of a 39-year-old woman, later identified by authorities as Anna Maree, into the sea. Shortly thereafter, a second wave overwhelmed the boat, causing it to capsize.
Rescue Efforts
Following the incident, a nearby boat quickly responded to the scene, successfully rescuing 12 of the 13 passengers, which included two local crew members. The rescuers also located Maree’s body amidst the turbulent waters.
The survivors of the accident were transported to a nearby health clinic, where they received medical attention for their injuries. Fortunately, they have since been reported to be in stable condition.
Broader Context
This tragic event underscores ongoing safety concerns regarding maritime travel in Indonesia, an archipelago comprising over 17,000 islands with a population of approximately 280 million. Over the years, maritime accidents have claimed hundreds of lives due to issues such as overcrowded boats and lax enforcement of safety regulations. The popularity of boating as a cost-effective mode of transportation continues to make safety a critical issue for both local and international tourists.
Authorities are expected to further investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, aiming to address safety measures and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
