This Historic Bali Beach Hotel Transforms into The Meru Sanur, Anchoring New Health and Tourism Hub

The Grand Inna Bali Beach Hotel, a revered landmark with a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1966, is poised for a spectacular transformation. Once a favorite retreat of President Soekarno, this iconic hotel, initiated under his vision, was funded by the war reparations from Japan. The hotel, strategically located on the pristine white-sandy beach of Sanur, was one of the pioneering establishments to grace the Balinese shoreline.

The ten-story architectural marvel, standing tall as the only structure of its kind in Bali, was constructed before the regulations that now limit the height of buildings to 15 meters. President Soekarno’s vision and the funding from Japan’s war reparations marked the hotel’s significance as a symbol of international standards and management in Bali.

The ambitious project is part of the broader development of the Sanur KEK, which aims to position itself as a premier medical tourism destination. The Meru Sanur will anchor a comprehensive complex that includes a world-class hospital, a convention center, an ethnomedicinal botanic garden, and a commercial center. The initiative is designed to attract more international tourists and contribute significantly to Bali’s economy.

Deputy Minister of State-Owned Enterprises, Kartika Wirjoatmodjo, revealed that the grand launch of The Meru Sanur is planned for February 2024, marking the hotel’s transition into a modern, five-star class establishment. The renaming of the historic hotel aligns with the efforts to revitalize the legacy of President Soekarno, who once stayed at the Grand Inna Bali Beach.

The broader vision for the Sanur KEK, as outlined by Minister of BUMN Erick Thohir, includes the establishment of internationally acclaimed facilities such as a top-tier hospital, a convention center, and the revitalization of the Grand Inna Bali Beach Hotel. The KEK will serve as a health tourism hub, offering services like plastic surgery in the world-class hospital.

The development, led by Menteri Koordinator Bidang Perekonomian Airlangga Hartarto, emphasizes Sanur’s natural healing qualities and positions it as a super specialist health location. Airlangga expressed confidence that the first-class healthcare facilities in the Sanur KEK would boost the confidence of foreign tourists and elevate Indonesia’s status in medical tourism.

With the hotel set to reopen as The Meru Sanur, it will be part of a strategic plan to integrate Sanur and Benoa into an ecosystem that caters to a more upscale segment of tourists. The KEK Sanur and Bali Maritime Tourism Hub (BMTH) in Benoa are envisioned to be attractive icons for high-end travelers, offering an integrated experience distinct from other popular Bali destinations like Seminyak and Legian.

In addition to its historical significance, the Grand Inna Bali Beach, now evolving into The Meru Sanur, is poised to play a crucial role in the transformation of Sanur into a world-class destination for both health and tourism. The completion of the Bali International Hospital, set to open in April 2024, further solidifies the region’s position as a leading player in medical tourism in Southeast Asia. The hospital, equipped with cutting-edge technologies, will specialize in cardiology, neurology, ICU, gastroenterology, and orthopedics, offering international patients and private Indonesian citizens access to top-quality healthcare services. The comprehensive healthcare services, along with the captivating coastal views and proximity to the Ngurah Rai International Airport, make Sanur a promising hub for global travelers seeking top-notch medical treatments and a luxurious vacation experience.
