New Seaplane Service to Simplify Travel Between Bali and East Java for Tourists
Starting early next year, tourists will find it significantly easier and more convenient to explore the diverse regions of Bali and East Java, thanks to a new seaplane route launched by local airline Aman Air. This new service aims to boost tourism by offering a quicker, scenic, and potentially more affordable travel option between these two popular destinations.
Enhanced Connectivity for Tourists
Traditionally, tourists traveling between Bali and East Java have relied on a combination of road transport and ferry crossings. Usually, travelers must journey westward across Bali to Gilimanuk, then take a ferry to Banyuwangi in East Java. This route can be time-consuming and complicated due to limited public transport options and restrictions on self-driving rental vehicles across provinces.
Responding to these challenges, Aman Air’s forthcoming seaplane flight will revolutionize travel by connecting Bali’s Benoa Harbour directly with Pang Pang Bay in Banyuwangi, East Java. This direct water-to-water route eliminates the lengthy overland trip to Gilimanuk and ferry crossing, cutting down travel time and costs significantly.
The Flight Experience
The service will utilize Twin Otter aircraft, which accommodate 16 to 18 passengers. As a true seaplane operation, the plane will take off and land on water, providing travelers with a unique and scenic experience. According to Aman Air President Director Michael Nicholas, Banyuwangi is an ideal destination with rich natural beauty, sufficient amenities, and year-round attractions, making it a promising tourist spot.
Aman Air Deputy Director Daniel Dwi Ananta expressed optimism about launching the service in the first or second quarter of 2026. He highlighted the potential for expanded collaboration between tourism operators in both regions and shared plans to develop tour packages. One example is a convenient one-day excursion allowing tourists to depart from Benoa in the morning, explore Banyuwangi’s attractions, and return by afternoon.
Local Support and Tourism Development
The Regent of Banyuwangi, Ipuk Fiestiandani, welcomed the new seaplane route, emphasizing its role in making the region more accessible and offering visitors a novel travel experience. The initiative aligns with broader efforts by the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Wonderful Indonesia to promote lesser-known destinations and position Bali as a hub for exploring the wider archipelago.
Currently, Aman Air primarily provides cargo services, including fuel deliveries to Indonesia’s remote areas. This new commercial passenger service marks a significant step in the airline’s expansion, promising safe and reliable air travel options for tourists venturing beyond Bali’s central regions.
