18 of Indonesian’s best aerial surfers will compete for a spot in the Red Bull Airborne that will be held during the WSL Corona Bali Protected at Keramas from May 13th – 19th 2019.

Red Bull Airborne is an aerial surfing competition that will be held in three different countries, one of them is Indonesia. On Sunday 12th May 2019, 18 of Indonesia’s most talented aerial surfers will take on the waves of Padma Beach in Bali to compete for a single spot in the upcoming Red Bull Airborne Bali, which will be held during the WSL’s Corona Bali Protected World Championship Tour Men’s and Women’s event that runs from May 13th – 25th 2019 at Keramas Beach in the Gianyar Regency of Bali.

The Red Bull Airborne series was created by the retired WCT competitor Josh Kerr, who had a long career as one of the world’s most creative and innovative aerial surfers and even has an aerial maneuver named after him, the Kerrupt Flip.

The first stop of Red Bull Airborne 2019 series was held on the Gold Coast of Australia at Duranbah during the Quiksilver Pro, and was won by Italo Ferreira. There are a total of three stops in 2019, Australia, Bali, and the final stop in France.

The Bali Trials event will consist of Two Rounds, a Qualifying Round, and a Final Round, where only 1 out of 18 Indonesian participants will be declared as the winner in the Final and will have a chance to compete against 17 other surfers in the Red Bull Airborne event at Keramas. The 17 other surfers are handpicked by Josh Kerr himself, a combination of WCT surfers and underground talents.

There is $70,000 up for grabs at each Red Bull Airborne event, and the winner of the event takes home a whopping $20,000.

Each air is scored and judged on a 0-10 scale, even if a surfer completes multiple airs on one wave. The aerials are scored on completion, commitment, degree of difficulty, innovative and progressive maneuvers, style, speed, power, height, and technicality, making for some amazing displays of aerial acrobatics. The goal of the judging criteria is to push the limits of aerial surfing and give the talented lineup of competitors the opportunity to pursue their passion and put their talent on the world stage.

The Red Bull Airborne Bali Trials are set for May 12th at Padma Beach, with a targeted start time at 12 noon. There will be drinks, music, shade to support all the competitors and spectators, and of course plenty of high-flying action above the waves.  The winner will be announced as the sun sets over the Indian Ocean, signaling the beginning of a cruisy beach party at On The Juice.
