Lombok Set to Become the Next Bali, Indonesian Tourism Ministry Promotes Island as Premier Global Destination

LOMBOK, INDONESIA — As Bali continues to attract swarms of tourists year-round, the Indonesian Tourism Ministry has set its sights on Lombok, a picturesque island located just east of Bali, with plans to transform it into a leading global destination. Known as the “Island of a Thousand Mosques,” Lombok is gaining recognition for its pristine beaches, natural beauty, and culturally rich, Muslim-friendly environment.

A Tranquil Alternative to Bali

Separated from Bali by the Lombok Strait, Lombok offers visitors a more peaceful and less commercialized experience. The island’s azure beaches, stunning landscapes, and natural attractions remain relatively unspoiled compared to its famous neighbor. Travel experts and tourists alike describe Lombok as a “last paradise” waiting to be explored, highlighting its calm atmosphere and untouched charm.

Australian surfer Adam, enjoying the waves at Senggigi Beach, shared his perspective with Arab News: “As Bali gets more and more busy, people have started looking to its beautiful neighbor Lombok for a reason. This paradise really has it all — waterfalls, rice terraces, sea surf, sea-facing resorts for sunsets, surfing spots, and restaurants offering great food.”

Halal Tourism and Cultural Heritage

Lombok’s majority Muslim population contributes to its identity as a prominent halal tourism destination, particularly appealing to travelers from the Middle East and other Muslim-majority countries seeking privacy and family-friendly environments.

Yudhi Lingga, general manager of the Royal Avila boutique resort in Lombok, emphasized the government’s vision: “After the success of Bali as a premier tourist destination, the Indonesian government has sensed the opportunity to create another lucrative tourist haven in the archipelago. Lombok, less than an hour away by flight, will be one of them.”

The island offers halal-certified restaurants, boutique sea-facing resorts, and serene beaches, including the nearby Gili Islands — Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Gili Meno — where tourists can enjoy activities such as private snorkeling, diving, and cycling in a motor-vehicle-free environment focused on privacy and peaceful experiences.

Adventure and Nature for Every Traveler

Beyond halal tourism, Lombok appeals to a wide range of tourists seeking adventure, cultural immersion, and natural beauty. Mount Rinjani, an active stratovolcano in North Lombok, draws hikers eager to explore its challenging trails, while beachfront areas such as Kuta and Banko Banko are favored surfing spots.

Gede Apri, director of sales at Holiday Resort Lombok at Senggigi, invited travelers to experience the island’s natural wonders: “Set your feet on the spectacular ground of Indonesian nature in Lombok and feel the tropical breeze touch your skin.”

Mandalika: The Emerging Heart of Lombok’s Tourism

At the island’s southern coast lies Mandalika, a special economic tourism zone quickly emerging as Lombok’s capital of leisure and entertainment. Once a secret surfing haven, Mandalika now boasts luxurious resorts, vibrant bars and nightclubs, racing circuits, water parks, golf courses, and spas.

Recent events have highlighted Mandalika’s growing international appeal; earlier this month, nearly 150,000 spectators attended a motorcycle race at the Mandalika Circuit, signaling the island’s ability to host world-class events.

Visitors to Mandalika can also explore nearby beaches such as Tanjung Aan, Kuta, Gerupuk, Serenting, and Seger Beach, which offer a variety of water activities from swimming and surfing to tranquil relaxation.

Ivan Kamajaya of the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism remarked, “Blessed with beautiful nature and enhanced by the hands of professionals, Mandalika is designed to make your dream vacation a reality.”

A Growing Destination for Global Travelers

Lombok’s blend of natural beauty, adventure opportunities, and rich cultural heritage centered on the Sasak community attracts tourists from Australia, Europe, and the Middle East. Its peaceful atmosphere contrasts with Bali’s bustling tourism scene, offering an alternative for those seeking space and authenticity.

As Indonesia promotes Lombok as the “new Bali,” the island stands poised to become a next-generation tourism hotspot that balances development with cultural preservation and environmental sustainability.

With its increasing infrastructure, expanding range of accommodations, and dedication to halal and family-friendly tourism, Lombok is rising as an idyllic escape promising visitors serenity, natural wonders, and genuine cultural experiences.
