Gunungkidul regency, Yogyakarta, has set a target of attracting 344,000 tourists visiting its tourist destinations during this Christmas and New Year holidays. The targeted holiday period will last from Dec. 22 to Jan. 1 next year, kompas.com reported.
Gunungkidul Tourism Agency secretary, Hary Sukomono, said that 2.7 million tourists had visited Gunungkidul this year, well below the target of 3.5 million.
The region’s tourism revenue also has not reached its target of Rp 28.2 billion (US$1.93 million). As of Dec. 7, the figure stands at Rp 22.1 billion. The extreme weather at the start of the year is presumed to be the reason for this.
The agency is confident that the targets are still achievable, despite the governor’s rejection of this year’s proposed amendment to the regional expenditure budget.
However, the lack of budget change means no entertainment at the tourist spots, according to the agency’s head Asti Wijayanti. “We are maximizing promotions through social media,” Asti said.
Gunungkidul police chief Ahmad Fuady said the local police would carry out a centralized operation coded Operation Lilin Progo 2018. It is a joint project by the police, the national army, community organizations and the regency administration.
Starting from Dec. 24, the operation will protect the region from terrorist threats, criminal disturbances and traffic problems. To anticipate traffic congestion, alternative routes will be available during the operation.
