According to I Nyoman Gede Wiryajaya, Coordinator of Data and Information at BBMKG Region III Denpasar, winds exceeding 25 knots or 45 kilometers per hour are considered extreme. Tirta Wijaya, Head Sub-Coordinator of Services at BBMKG Region III Denpasar, explained that the extreme wind speeds are a result of the convergence zone, where two wind directions meet in the vicinity of Bali.

“Convergence or the meeting of two wind directions is causing the winds to be quite strong these past two days,” he stated. BBMKG Region III Denpasar reports that the winds generally blow from the southwest to the northwest in the Bali region.

According to Tirta, extreme wind speeds can lead to high waves in maritime areas. BBMKG estimates that from January 22 to 25, 2024, wave heights could reach 2.5 meters in the Bali Sea, the northern and southern parts of the Bali Strait, the Badung Strait, and the southern part of the Lombok Strait. In the southern waters of Bali, wave heights are expected to reach four meters. BBMKG emphasizes that both wind speed and wave height pose risks to maritime safety.
