Bali Implements Stricter Visa Regulations: Tourists Must Carry Passports at All Times
In a significant move to enforce immigration laws, Bali’s immigration authorities have introduced a stringent policy requiring foreign tourists to carry their passports and stay permits whenever they leave their accommodations. This latest measure is part of a broader crackdown aimed at curbing increasing visa violations on the island, a popular destination known for its vibrant tourism sector.
Deployment of Immigration Patrol Task Force
The enforcement comes with the recent formation of the Bali Regional Immigration Patrol Task Force, a dedicated unit of 100 officers deployed across high-traffic tourist areas. Their presence spans multiple hotspots such as Canggu, Seminyak, Kerobokan, Sanur, Benoa, Uluwatu, Bingin, Mertasari, Kuta, Nusa Dua, Ubud, and Legian. Announced by Indonesia’s Minister for Immigration, Agus Andrianto, this task force was established earlier in August to bolster oversight and ensure tourists comply with Indonesia’s immigration rules.
Random Checks and Compliance Monitoring
Recent footage from the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office revealed task force officers conducting random passport checks in Nusa Dua, one of Bali’s luxury resort hubs. During these operations, tourists were questioned about their possession of passports and related travel documents. While several travelers admitted to leaving their passports in hotel safes, authorities temporarily refrained from imposing fines or other penalties. The patrol team, equipped with uniforms, body cameras, and vehicles, has intensified efforts island-wide to monitor and deter immigration violations.
Addressing Rising Visa Violations
The enhanced checks respond to a noticeable increase in cases where foreign visitors overstay or breach visa conditions. Immigration officials emphasize that the requirement to carry identification documents is critical to maintaining regulatory compliance and ensuring swift verification during inspections.
Future Measures and Tourism Tax Monitoring
Looking ahead, Bali’s immigration officials have indicated the possibility of extending these random checks to include verification of payments for the Bali Tourism Tax Levy. Although the enforcement of this tax currently falls under the jurisdiction of the provincial government’s Tourism Task Force, closer coordination with immigration officers may follow to improve compliance rates.
