Pemuteran Village in Bali Earns Prestigious UNWTO Best Tourism Village Award for 2025
Pemuteran Village, located in Bali’s Buleleng Regency, has achieved a significant milestone by being recognized as one of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Best Tourism Villages for the year 2025. This global accolade was announced during a ceremony held on October 17, 2025, in Huzhou, China, where Pemuteran was among 52 villages selected from over 300 candidates spanning 75 countries worldwide.
A Collaborative Achievement
Gede Dody Sukma Oktiva Askara, Head of the Buleleng Tourism Office, highlighted that the distinguished recognition is the outcome of a concerted effort involving local residents, business stakeholders, and government bodies. “This global recognition was the result of collaboration between the community, businesses, and the government,” he said, underscoring the importance of unified community engagement to the village’s success.
Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, expressed pride in the honor, emphasizing its significance in promoting community-based tourism initiatives across the country. She stated, “I am very proud and optimistic. This award will inspire other tourism villages throughout Indonesia to continue optimising natural potential, cultural heritage, and community empowerment towards more inclusive and sustainable tourism.”
The Charms and Conservation Efforts of Pemuteran
Situated on Bali’s northwest coast, Pemuteran is celebrated for its harmonious blend of natural splendour and community-driven environmental conservation. Notably, the village is home to approximately 80% of Indonesia’s coral species. Thanks to dedicated local efforts, including the celebrated Biorock Pemuteran project initiated in the late 1980s, the coral reefs have undergone significant revitalization, turning the village into a global model of marine conservation and sustainable tourism.
Another notable program is the Pemuteran Green Turtle Conservation Group, which manages initiatives focused on protecting green turtles. Visitors have the opportunity to engage in educational sessions and participate in the release of turtle hatchlings, activities frequently organized at the Reef Seen Diver’s Resort. These programs place environmental stewardship and education at the heart of the village’s tourism offer.

Following this international recognition, the Bali Tourism Office anticipates a rise in visitor numbers to Pemuteran, drawing on precedents like Penglipuran and Jatiluwih villages, which experienced similar boosts after gaining UNWTO awards. Plans are underway to prepare for this growth by enhancing infrastructure, expanding promotional activities, and providing technical assistance to local stakeholders.
One ongoing initiative contributing to the village’s appeal is the annual Pemuteran Bay Festival, which enjoys continued support from government agencies as part of efforts to foster sustainable tourism development.
Furthermore, by joining the UNWTO Global Network of Best Tourism Villages, Pemuteran will benefit from enhanced international cooperation and knowledge exchange. This membership is expected to open doors for greater global visibility and strengthen the village’s capacity for responsible tourism.
