Tourists Warned of Increasing Bag Snatching Crimes in Bali’s Kuta Resort
Bali authorities have issued a warning to tourists to remain vigilant amid a rising number of bag snatching and robbery incidents in the popular Kuta resort area. The recent spate of attacks has prompted both police and local security teams to intensify efforts to protect visitors and maintain public order.
Recent Incident Sparks Concern
On Monday, September 1, 2025, a tourist, initially reported to be an Irish national, became the latest victim of a bag snatching attempt on Jalan Kubu Anyar in Kuta. CCTV footage circulating online shows the victim walking alongside her mother as they approached a road crossing. As they made their way from one side of the street to the other, a motorbike rider wearing a grey helmet, mask, and black jacket abruptly turned near the victim and attempted to snatch her necklace.
Kuta Police Chief Commissioner Agus Riwayanto Diputra confirmed the incident, stating that although the perpetrator tried to pull off the victim’s necklace, it did not break. However, the force of the pull caused the victim to fall onto the asphalt. “At that time, the victim was about to cross the road. The perpetrator came on a motorbike and immediately pulled the victim’s necklace. Fortunately, it didn’t break, but the victim fell due to the force,” explained Commissioner Diputra.
The police noted that the victim has not yet filed a formal report, but investigations continue based on the CCTV evidence. The police chief also shared that details regarding the suspect’s physical appearance and the vehicle have been examined, though no further information has been released at this stage.
Calls for Public Cooperation and Safety Advice
Police Chief Diputra urged the community to report any suspicious activity by contacting the 110 emergency call center. He emphasized that maintaining security is a shared responsibility between authorities and the public. “We invite the entire community to work together to maintain security and order, because conducive public order and security is not only the task of the Police but our shared responsibility,” he stated.
Tourists have been advised to adopt precautionary measures to reduce the risk of falling victim to such crimes. Suggestions include avoiding wearing necklaces or displaying expensive jewelry in public places, refraining from using cell phones while walking or driving, and choosing handbags or backpacks that limit easy access by thieves.
Increased Patrols and Community Security Efforts
The Bali Police have intensified night patrols in crime-prone tourist areas such as Kuta over the past year, yet these kinds of opportunistic attacks continue to occur, often on quieter, even well-lit streets. Criminals reportedly target tourists who appear vulnerable or distracted.
In addition to police efforts, security patrols are supported by the Kuta Traditional Village security team. Ngurah Alit Ardana, head of the village security, highlighted the importance of safeguarding Kuta as an international tourist destination, stating, “Our area is guarded by 150 self-initiative security members. They routinely maintain the security of the area. The Kuta area, which is an international tourist destination, should be a special concern for security.”
