Governor’s Call for Responsible Tourism

Visitors are now required to dress modestly and behave respectfully while on sacred grounds, with the expectation to hire licensed tour guides for visits to cultural and natural attractions.

To contribute to Bali’s tourism infrastructure, visitors are reminded of the tourist levy, which costs approximately $9 and must be paid electronically via the Love Bali platform. Funds generated from this levy are allocated toward the maintenance and development of tourism-related infrastructure.

Driving Regulations and Accommodation Standards

With the increasing number of tourists opting for rented vehicles to explore Bali, Governor Koster reiterated the responsibilities that come with this choice. He urged visitors to possess valid driver’s licenses, wear helmets when necessary, adhere to local traffic laws, and avoid driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Additionally, tourists must utilize licensed car rental services and choose accommodations that meet Bali’s legal standards.

Respecting Cultural Norms

The updated guidelines also address cultural practices specific to Balinese traditions. For instance, entry to sacred sites is restricted to worshippers dressed in traditional Balinese attire. Notably, women who are menstruating, as well as those who have recently experienced a family loss, are prohibited from entering temple spaces due to local beliefs regarding purity.

Furthermore, the publication Visit Bali emphasizes that climbing sacred trees and monuments is strictly forbidden, particularly for the purpose of taking inappropriate photographs. The governor also highlighted the ban on single-use plastics and the prohibition against littering in public spaces, including beaches and lakes. Tourists are cautioned that aggressive language and behavior may lead to legal repercussions under Indonesian law.
