Bali Implements Stricter Tourist Rules and Fines for 2025 to Curb Unruly Behavior
Bali, the popular Indonesian island renowned for its vibrant culture and natural beauty, is introducing stringent regulations for tourists starting in 2025. These new measures aim to preserve the island’s traditions, protect its environment, and ensure a respectful and safe experience for both visitors and locals.
Under Circular Letter (SE) Number 7 of 2025 issued by the Bali Provincial government and championed by Governor Wayan Koster, tourists will face clear obligations and prohibitions with enforceable penalties to manage the effects of mass tourism. New Tourism Levy and Mandatory Certified Guides
One of the key changes includes a mandatory tourism levy of IDR 150,000 (approximately USD 9.03) that visitors must pay either before arrival or during their stay through the official Love Bali website. Additionally, tourists visiting the island’s heritage or natural sites are now required to hire certified tour guides licensed by the local authorities. These guides are trained to help visitors engage respectfully and knowledgeably with Bali’s customs and sacred locations.
Currency Exchange and Transactions
To promote financial transparency and safety, tourists are instructed to exchange currency only at licensed money changers, including banks and government-authorized institutions. All transactions in Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) must utilize Bank Indonesia’s official QR code system, ensuring compliance with official monetary regulations.
Stricter Traffic and Vehicle Rules
New traffic and transportation guidelines address road safety, a significant concern given Bali’s popularity among motorbike rental users. Tourists must possess a valid international or Indonesian driver’s license and adhere to all traffic laws, including speed limits, helmet use, passenger capacity, and abstaining from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Visitors must respect Bali’s deeply held cultural traditions and natural spaces. New rules prohibit entering temple sanctuaries unless for religious purposes and with appropriate attire.
