Official Launch of Bali Tourism Investment Chamber (BTIC): A New Era for Bali’s Tourism Sector

Bali, Indonesia – October 17, 2025

A groundbreaking initiative aimed at strengthening transparency and promoting sustainable economic growth within Bali’s vital tourism industry was officially launched today: the Bali Tourism Investment Chamber (BTIC). This innovative collaborative platform unites foreign investors, local stakeholders, and government authorities in a shared effort to foster clearer communication and mutual understanding across Bali’s dynamic tourism sector.

From Idea to Reality: The Journey of BTIC

The concept behind BTIC originated earlier this year in May 2025 during discussions between Mrs. Ir. Rizki Handayani, MBTM, Deputy Minister for Industry and Investment at Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism, and Robert Beard of the Bali Foreign Investment Advisory Service. Both have longstanding experience working closely with Indonesian government ministries and the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce (KADIN), particularly emphasizing women leaders’ roles in government decision-making.

Following these initial talks, Robert Beard engaged Mrs. Sophie from Yak Magazine and Mr. Terje from Seven Stones Indonesia to expand the dialogue. With the support of Seven Stones Indonesia—an organization frequently collaborating with the Ministry of Tourism—a select group convened on July 17, 2025, to explore improving communication channels between investors and government representatives. This meeting led to the formation of a working group dedicated to formalizing what would become BTIC.

BTIC’s Purpose and Vision

The Bali Tourism Investment Chamber has been created with one primary goal: to act as a neutral, politically independent platform that ensures economic benefits for Bali, its local communities, and the multitude of residents and stakeholders involved in the island’s tourism.

With clear commitments to transparency and collaboration, BTIC will serve as a constructive bridge between all parties. It will facilitate understanding of regulatory changes, enable the socialization of new policies, and address challenges faced by more than 25,000 foreign-invested establishments operating in Bali. At the same time, BTIC seeks to respect the unique cultural, legal, and community contexts of the island while encouraging sustainable development aligned with environmental stewardship.

Leadership and Founding Members: Experience Meets Innovation

BTIC’s interim board members bring together over a century of combined experience and have supported thousands of foreign investors in Bali and across Indonesia. The founding members emphasize inclusivity and expertise drawn from diverse backgrounds.

Among those leading this effort are:

  • Robert Ian Bonnick, affectionately known as “The Inspirationalist,” whose extensive global experience spans leadership, community building, and hospitality. With roots in London’s hotel industry and a reputation in Bali as a connector and strategist, Robert embodies BTIC’s mission to unite people around common goals.

  • Elvira Wijsen, co-founder of the internationally recognized sustainability movement Bye Bye Plastic Bags, represents the emerging generation of Indonesian leaders. Elvira’s passionate environmental advocacy ensures that sustainable investment practices remain central to BTIC’s work.

Alongside Terje Nilsen and Charlotte Sophie, these leaders set the foundation for what promises to be an evolving, democratic organization endorsed by the Indonesian government.

Looking Ahead: A Collaborative Future for Bali’s Tourism Sector

BTIC’s launch marks the beginning of an ongoing commitment to driving responsible tourism investment that benefits both the economy and the community. The chamber invites participation from a broad spectrum of stakeholders, encouraging open discussion and cooperation to tackle sector challenges and innovate solutions.
