Enhanced Security Measures Implemented at Bali’s Top Tourist Attractions

Bali, Indonesia – April 2, 2025
As Bali prepares for a surge in tourist activity during the Nyepi and Lebaran Eid al-Fitr celebrations, local authorities have ramped up security across the island’s major tourist hotspots. The operation, dubbed Operation Ketupat Agung 2025, began on March 20 and is set to last until April 8, 2025, coinciding with the busy holiday season.

Nationwide Security Initiative

Operation Ketupat Agung is part of a broader nationwide security initiative aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of both residents and tourists during significant cultural and religious festivities. This year’s Ramadan and Lebaran holidays are particularly busy, prompting authorities to take extra precautions at transport hubs and popular attractions.

The enhanced security measures are visible throughout the island. Security personnel have been deployed at key locations, including Gilimanuk Harbor, which links travelers to East Bali; Sanur Port, providing access to Nusa Penida; and the I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, a vital gateway for international arrivals.

Increased Tourism Activity

Bali’s airports and transportation services are experiencing considerable activity as the peak holiday period unfolds. On March 30, the day following Nyepi, I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport recorded approximately 73,000 passengers across 390 flights. This represents a 3% increase in tourist arrivals compared to the previous year’s Eid holiday, highlighting the recovery of tourism in the region.

Ahmad Syaugi Shahab, the General Manager of the airport, reported to journalists that the improving passenger numbers indicate a rebound in travel, stating, “Although compared to last year’s Eid, it has not shown significant growth, but if you look at the daily average of passengers in January and February 2025, over the last three days the numbers have improved.”

Shahab also emphasized the importance of collaboration among various agencies to ensure smooth airport operations during this bustling period.

Heightened Presence at Tourist Attractions

With the expected influx of visitors, police and military personnel will be particularly visible at Bali’s most popular attractions. Senior Commissioner Pol. Ariasany of the Bali Police stated, “There are a number of tourist attractions that are the focus of security because they are expected to be crowded with tourists,” highlighting areas such as Bedugul Botanical Gardens, Kuta, Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK), Sanur, Tanah Lot, Uluwatu, Kintamani, and Canggu.

Travelers are advised to anticipate increased traffic and larger crowds at these destinations and to plan accordingly to avoid delays.

Emphasis on Cultural Respect

In conjunction with the security measures, Governor Wayan Koster has reiterated the importance of cultural respect among visitors to the island. The provincial leader has outlined a list of guidelines for tourists, focusing on adherence to local customs and the preservation of cultural integrity during their stay.

He urged tourists to wear appropriate attire when visiting sacred spots and to respect Balinese customs and traditions, encouraging a harmonious relationship between visitors and the community.

Pol. Ariasany echoed these sentiments, advising travelers to remain vigilant in crowded places to mitigate potential risks. He stated, “We urge tourists, both local and foreign, to always be careful and maintain their own safety. In crowded places, there is the potential for criminal acts that can harm all parties.”

Conclusion

As Bali’s top tourist attractions welcome a new wave of visitors, authorities are committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience while upholding the island’s rich cultural heritage. Travelers are encouraged to respect local practices and stay informed of the ongoing security efforts to ensure a smooth holiday experience.
