Bali Remains Safe for Tourists Despite Recent Protests, Officials Affirm
Denpasar, September 2, 2025 – Despite a series of protests that have swept across Indonesia, including demonstrations at the Bali Police Headquarters and the Bali Regional House of Representatives, the Bali government has assured tourists that the island remains a safe and welcoming destination.
The recent civil unrest has prompted several countries, including Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada, to issue travel advisories cautioning their citizens about traveling to Indonesia. These warnings include Bali, Indonesia’s premier tourist hotspot.
Responding to these concerns, I Wayan Sumarajaya, head of the Bali Tourism Office, emphasized on Monday, September 1, that the tourism environment on the island continues to be stable and secure. “Bali remains safe and conducive for all tourists despite the demonstrations at the Bali Police Headquarters and in the central area of Denpasar,” he stated from Denpasar.
Sumarajaya highlighted that the island’s tourist spots and activities have been operating normally and uninterrupted since the protests began. He acknowledged and respected the precautionary measures taken by foreign governments but expressed hope that travel warnings would be temporary.
The stability is attributed to the collaborative efforts of Bali’s tourism stakeholders—hotels, transport services, tourist attractions, and local communities—who all prioritize maintaining a safe and comfortable environment for visitors. Sumarajaya remarked, “Everyone understands that the comfort and safety of Bali is pivotal, so activities held to convey the people’s aspirations to the government do not interfere with the tourism aspects.”
Further underpinning the island’s security is the close cooperation between law enforcement agencies, tourism operators, and government bodies, which together help to manage public order while supporting the island’s economic mainstay.
Bali continues to be the foremost magnet for foreign tourists in Indonesia. According to official data released by Statistics Indonesia (BPS) on September 1, the island welcomed approximately 3.98 million foreign visitors from January to July 2025. This figure marks a notable increase of 12.46% compared to the same period last year, demonstrating the island’s ongoing appeal despite the national protests.
Tourism remains the backbone of Bali’s economy, and the local authorities are keen on preserving the island’s reputation as a safe and attractive destination for international travelers. Visitors are encouraged to stay informed through official channels but can expect to experience Bali’s renowned hospitality and vibrant culture without disruption.
