Dead after unrest in Bali’s Kerobokan prison

Share This Post:

At least two prisoners have died after fighting between inmates at Bali’s Kerobokan prison.

Police in riot gear were called to Bali’s main jail on Thursday afternoon to deal with fighting between prisoners and by early evening it was confirmed that prisoners had been killed.

Several injured inmates were taken away for treatment, and police confiscated a large number of makeshift weapons.

A spokesman for Indonesia’s department of corrections said that the violence was caused by some kind of misunderstanding — although authorities were still investigating the cause.

There were no reports of any injuries to the Australians inside the prison, who include members of the so-called Bali Nine drug smuggling syndicate and Perth man Joshua Terelinck, who is due to be freed early next week after serving two and a half months for his role in a fatal motorcycle accident.

Kerobokan prison is a high security facility that has housed many foreign prisoners including convicted Australian drug traffickers Schapelle Corby, Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan.
