Bali Launches Digital Payment System to Promote Cashless Tourism Experience

November 13, 2025 — In a significant move to modernize the tourism experience, Bank Indonesia has unveiled a new digital payment initiative aimed at facilitating cashless transactions for tourists visiting Bali. The innovative scheme, known as the Indonesia Tourist Travel Pack, officially launched at Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, is designed to seamlessly integrate tourists into Indonesia’s growing digital economy.

A Seamless Cashless Experience for Tourists

The Indonesia Tourist Travel Pack offers travelers a convenient way to access Indonesian SIM cards complete with mobile data and phone numbers, alongside chip-based electronic money via an e-wallet system. This development is poised to simplify everyday expenditures during vacations, from hotel bills and shopping to dining and entry fees at attractions.

A core component of this new system is its integration with the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS), a nationwide digital payment platform that allows cashless payments through QR-code scanning and prepaid e-wallets. As QRIS gains traction across Indonesia, tourists will find it easier to make swift, secure, and cash-free payments throughout the island.

Enhancing Tourism Through Technology

Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia, Fillianingsh Hendarta, emphasized the significance of this digital push during the launch event, stating, “Ease of transactions is an important part of the tourist experience in Bali.” He explained that the Indonesia Tourist Travel Pack is a three-element ecosystem crafted to enhance both payment and communication ease, allowing visitors to maximize their travel experiences on the island.

Hendarta further clarified, “These initiatives are aimed at positioning Indonesia as a more tourist-friendly destination while laying the groundwork for a comprehensive, cashless, and digital tourism infrastructure.”

Supporting Services and Tourism Information Hub

To bolster the rollout, Bank Indonesia and its partners have also established a Tourism Information Center within Ngurah Rai International Airport. This center serves as a vital service point where newly arrived tourists can acquire the Tourist Travel Pack and access a QRIS Nusantara Tourism Guidebook. This guidebook provides detailed instructions on using QRIS for transactions and offers valuable information about various tourist spots.

Bank Indonesia highlighted the positive impact of these technological enhancements, saying, “With the support of multiple stakeholders, the experience of international tourists in Bali will become more convenient and practical. Tourists will be able to easily conduct transactions, whether paying for accommodation, shopping, enjoying local cafes, or entering tourist venues.”

Towards a More Inclusive and Sustainable Economy

By streamlining transactions, the initiative is expected to not only improve visitor satisfaction but also open new opportunities for local businesses. Increased ease of payment is anticipated to stimulate more inclusive and sustainable economic activities within Bali’s vibrant tourist industry.

Additional Developments: Rupiah Redenomination Update

Alongside the digital payment rollout, Indonesia is also moving forward with plans to redenominate the rupiah to simplify its currency system by removing three zeros. Though initially expected by 2027, government officials recently confirmed that this transition remains a longer-term goal and is "still a long way off."

For example, the current IDR 100,000 banknote would be revalued as IDR 100 under the redenomination plan, making the currency easier to use from both a domestic and tourist perspective.

Access to local SIM cards or e-SIMs remains an essential part of a smooth travel experience, enabling tourists to utilize navigation apps like Google Maps and ride-hailing services such as Grab and GoJek.
