Indonesia Arrests Two Foreigners Accused of Smuggling Cocaine to Bali

Indonesian authorities have apprehended two foreign nationals accused of smuggling significant quantities of cocaine into the popular tourist destination of Bali. The arrests highlight Indonesia’s ongoing battle against drug trafficking amid its strict anti-drug laws.

On July 13, customs officials at Bali’s international airport intercepted a Brazilian man and a South African woman after discovering suspicious substances during routine X-ray scans. The Brazilian, aged 25 and identified by his initials YB, was found with 3,086.36 grams (approximately 6.8 pounds) of cocaine concealed within the lining of his suitcase and backpack. The South African woman, 32, identified as LN, had 990.83 grams (about 2.1 pounds) of cocaine hidden in her underwear. Both were detained shortly after their arrival from Dubai.

Made Sinar Subawa, head of the Eradication Division at Bali’s Narcotic Agency, provided details during a press conference held in Denpasar, Bali’s capital. He stated that during interrogation, YB revealed he was promised 400 million rupiah (approximately $2,450) to hand over the cocaine he obtained in Brasilia to an individual named Tio Paulo. Meanwhile, LN expected to receive 25 million rupiah ($1,500) for delivering the drugs to a contact identified as Cindy. Despite these revelations, a subsequent police operation failed to apprehend Tio Paulo or Cindy, who are believed to be low-level distributors.

At the press briefing, authorities presented both suspects in orange prison uniforms and masks with their hands handcuffed, alongside the seized cocaine evidencing the scale of the smuggling attempt.

Indonesia is known for its stringent drug enforcement policies, which include the death penalty for convicted smugglers, sometimes carried out by firing squad. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Indonesia remains a significant hub for drug smuggling, partly due to international syndicates targeting the country’s youthful population.

Further judicial actions were anticipated later the same day in Denpasar District Court, where verdicts were scheduled for two other groups of foreign nationals facing drug charges. This includes an Argentine woman and a British man accused of cocaine smuggling, as well as three British nationals involved in drug offenses.

Data from Indonesia’s Ministry of Immigration and Corrections indicate that approximately 530 individuals are currently on death row, most for drug-related offenses, including 96 foreigners. The country’s most recent executions took place in July 2016, involving both Indonesian citizens and foreign nationals.
