Travel Advisory for Bali Tourists During Upcoming Eid al-Fitr Celebrations

As Bali prepares for a significant influx of tourists during the Eid al-Fitr holiday, visitors traveling to the island between March 23 and April 8, 2025, are advised to allow for extra travel time, particularly when returning to the airport. The anticipated surge in tourist activity is primarily attributed to the nationwide celebration of Eid al-Fitr, which is expected to create increased traffic and longer queues at transportation hubs across the island.

Increased Visitor Volume During Eid al-Fitr

Operation Ketupat Agung 2025, Indonesia’s nationwide security operation aimed at ensuring public safety during Eid al-Fitr, will commence on March 23, 2025. This marks the beginning of a period when many Indonesians embark on journeys to reunite with family and loved ones for the festive celebration.

Bali, known for its majority Balinese Hindu population, also attracts thousands of Indonesian families who travel to the island to celebrate Eid. Many Muslims residing and working in Bali will also return to their respective provinces to observe the holiday. This mix of cultural festivities creates a unique environment where the celebration of Eid coincides with Bali’s traditional rites.

Security Readiness and Traffic Management

As part of the preparations for the busy season, Bali’s Police Chief recently conducted a roll call for security personnel, highlighting the rigorous measures being put in place. In a recent statement, National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo reiterated, “This troop roll call is a form of final check on the readiness of personnel and infrastructure before the operation," emphasizing the need for comprehensive service delivery to the community during this bustling time.

Operation Ketupat Agung will see a deployment of thousands of police and military personnel, alongside transportation and security officials, across Bali and nationwide. Transportation hubs, including Gilimanuk Harbor in West Bali and I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, will receive particular emphasis in this operation.

Airport Preparedness for Holiday Traffic

Ahmad Syaugi Shahab, General Manager of I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, has shared insights regarding preparations to manage the increased flow of passengers at both the international and domestic terminals during the holiday period. With Eid closely following Nyepi—the Balinese Day of Silence observed on March 29—airport officials anticipate a 4.5 percent increase in passenger traffic, equating to approximately 1.5 million travelers, along with a 5.6 percent rise in flight operations, with 9,000 expected aircraft movements.

During Eid or Lebaran, a total of 912 security and support personnel will be stationed at the airport and surrounding areas. This team will include airport security, operational control assistance from the Indonesian Air Force, Airport Police, and local community security known as Pecalang.

Shahab expressed confidence that operations will be efficient, drawing on the lessons learned from prior holiday periods, such as Christmas and New Year. “On previous occasions, all stakeholders successfully managed transportation, and we are optimistic that this year’s Lebaran transport will also be smooth,” he stated. Plans are already in place to secure the airport even during the 24-hour closure on Nyepi, ensuring that emergency services remain accessible.

Travel Recommendations

Tourists are encouraged to factor in the potential for heavy traffic, particularly around Denpasar and the airport, which could delay travel times significantly. By allowing for additional time when heading to the airport, travelers can mitigate stress and ensure timely arrivals for their flights.

In response to the anticipated demand, 401 extra flights have been incorporated into the schedule at Bali Airport from multiple airlines, including Lion Air, Super Air Jet, and Garuda Indonesia, among others. These flights will service various destinations across Indonesia, including Jakarta, Surabaya, and Lombok.

Conclusion

As Bali braces for an influx of visitors during this unique convergence of cultural celebrations, both local authorities and airport management are implementing thorough preparations to facilitate a smooth travel experience. Tourists are urged to stay informed and plan accordingly to enjoy their holiday in this vibrant destination.
