Bali Authorities Issue Extreme Weather Warnings Across Popular Tourism Resorts

December 12, 2025 – The Bali Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BBMKG) has issued an extreme weather warning for the island, affecting major tourism areas from December 11 to December 18, 2025. This alert comes amid one of Indonesia’s most intense rainy seasons in recent history, prompting concerns for both residents and visitors alike.

Cyclone Formation and Weather Monitoring

According to the BBMKG, the warning follows the formation of cyclone seed 93S on December 11 in the South Indian Ocean region near West Nusa Tenggara. The system, though currently moderate with maximum wind speeds of 15 knots (28 km/h) and minimum pressure around 1009 hPa, is intensifying convection and rain cloud development over Bali.

The agency highlighted that active Equatorial Rossby and low-frequency waves, along with moderate atmospheric vorticity, have contributed to a convergence of air masses and wind deflection over the island. This synoptic situation is resulting in heightened convective weather activity, increasing risks of severe weather.

Areas Affected and Expected Conditions

BBMKG forecasts moderate to heavy rainfall across several regencies, including the key tourism hotspots of Badung, Denpasar, Tabanan, Bangli, Gianyar, Karangasem, as well as parts of Jembrana, Buleleng, and Klungkung. Strong winds are also expected in Badung, Denpasar, Tabanan, Jembrana, Bangli, Gianyar, Klungkung, and Karangasem.

Marine conditions are projected to be rough, with sea waves between 1.25 to 2.5 meters anticipated in the southern Bali Strait, Badung Strait, southern Lombok Strait, and southern Bali waters, posing potential dangers for sea travel and coastal activities.

Risks and Community Preparedness

The BBMKG warned that these extreme weather events could trigger hydrometeorological disasters such as floods, flash floods, landslides, strong winds, tornadoes, and hail, particularly in vulnerable areas with steep or mountainous terrain. Residents and tourists are urged to remain vigilant and be prepared for sudden weather changes over the course of the week.

Recent Incidents and Travel Advisory

The heavy rain has already caused disruptions, including a partial road collapse on December 10 along Penelokan Main Road in Kintamani, an area frequented by tourists. Local authorities are regulating traffic with a one-way flow at the collapse site, which may remain until the New Year. Tourists traveling to Kintamani or using this route are advised to exercise extreme caution.

Given the potential hazards, travel insurance covering natural disasters, extreme weather, and medical evacuation is strongly recommended for all visitors.

Safety Recommendations

BBMKG and local authorities advise the public to remain alert and:

  • Monitor official weather updates from BBMKG through their website and social media channels (@bmkgbali).
  • Keep emergency contact numbers readily available.
  • Avoid traveling in affected areas during heavy storms.
  • Exercise caution in mountainous or cliff regions susceptible to landslides.
  • Follow guidance from local officials and disaster management agencies.

Tourism operators and stakeholders are also encouraged to prepare for any potential weather impact and ensure safety protocols are in place.
