Tighter Security Measures Implemented at Bali’s Major Tourist Attractions

Bali, Indonesia – As Indonesia prepares for the peak of the Nyepi and Lebaran Eid al-Fitr religious festivals, a comprehensive security operation has been launched across Bali. Dubbed Operation Ketupat Agung 2025, this nationwide initiative aims to enhance safety and security during the celebrations, which are among the busiest times of the year for tourism.

The security operation commenced on March 20 and will be in effect until April 8, 2025, coinciding with the festive season that sees an influx of both domestic and international visitors. Security teams have been deployed at strategic locations throughout Bali, including key transport hubs such as Gilimanuk Harbor, Sanur Port, and I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport. These measures are designed to facilitate the movement of travelers while ensuring a safe and culturally respectful environment.

Increased Passenger Volume at Bali Airport

As the holiday period unfolds, I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport has reported significant traffic. On March 30, the airport served approximately 73,000 passengers through 390 flights, marking a 3% increase in arrivals compared to the same holiday period last year. Ahmad Syaugi Shahab, General Manager of the airport, noted that while the overall growth may not appear substantial on the surface, the daily average of passengers has shown marked improvement, particularly in the first few days of this year’s holiday.

Shahab emphasized the effectiveness of collaborative efforts among various agencies to maintain smooth airport operations during this busy time. He stated, “With the Eid holiday period still quite long, we will continue to strengthen coordination and increase supervision to ensure the quality of service to passengers is maintained.”

Heightened Security at Tourist Attractions

Beyond the airport, increased vigilance is evident across Bali’s major tourist attractions. The Bali Police Public Relations Chief, Senior Commissioner Pol. Ariasany, confirmed that additional police, military, and security personnel would be present at popular destinations known to attract large crowds. Some of these key attractions include Bedugul Botanical Gardens, Kuta Beach, Garuda Wisnu Kencana, Sanur Beach, Tanah Lot, Uluwatu Temple, Kintamani, and Canggu.

Pol. Ariasany advised travelers to plan their journeys accordingly, anticipating possible traffic delays and crowded conditions during this holiday period. “We expect these areas to be crowded with tourists, and it is essential to ensure public safety,” he said.

The provincial government has reiterated its appeal for visitors to respect Balinese culture and obey local laws. Governor Wayan Koster has reinstated a set of guidelines aiming to promote respectful and sustainable tourism. These rules emphasize the importance of honoring local customs, traditions, and arts, as well as wearing modest clothing at sacred sites and tourist attractions.

Reinforcing these sentiments, Pol Ariasany urged all tourists to remain cautious and prioritize their safety, particularly in busy environments where the potential for criminal activity may increase. “We urge tourists, both local and foreign, to always be careful and maintain their own safety,” he added.
