Remembering Erik de Haart: The Hero of Bali Bombings Passes Away
Sydney, Australia – Erik de Haart, a well-respected Sydney resident who gained recognition for his heroism in the aftermath of the 2002 Bali bombings, has died at the age of 67. The cause of death is believed to be a heart attack. His passing was confirmed by the Coogee Dolphins Rugby League Club on social media on Monday, where he was a life member and a prominent figure.
A Legacy of Courage
The Coogee Dolphins expressed their profound sorrow over de Haart’s unexpected death in a heartfelt message on social media. “It is with profound sadness that we advise of the sudden passing of Coogee Dolphins life member Erik de Haart,” the post read. “Erik was a loyal servant, life member & sponsor of our club. He will forever be remembered in the immediate aftermath of the Bali tragedy of 2002 as a hero.”
Club president Wayne Hack extended his deepest sympathies to de Haart’s family and friends, highlighting the enormous impact he had on those around him.
A Day of Tragedy
Erik de Haart was among those present at the Sari Club in Kuta on October 12, 2002, when two bombs exploded, resulting in the tragic loss of 202 lives, including 88 Australians. De Haart was on a trip with 11 teammates from the Coogee Dolphins at the time and lost six friends in the devastating attack that also targeted Paddy’s Bar.
Following the blasts, de Haart emerged as a hero, helping rescue the injured and transport them to safety. In a reflective interview with ABC News a decade later, he recounted the chaos of that day, describing how he carried wounded individuals from the club onto the backs of local motorcycles. “I’ve got all scars and burns on the bottom of my legs from kicking up ashes,” he recalled. “At the time you were oblivious to it; all the time you were trying to get people out.”
Community Tributes
Alby Talarico, a friend and fellow member of the Coogee Dolphins, shared his devastation over the loss. “Erik was a very popular figure; he did so much. Dolphins was where his heart was," he said. Talarico emphasized de Haart’s character, describing him as someone who “stood tall, who put his hand up instead of a hand out” and noting the extraordinary compassion he showed in the wake of the tragedy.
Social media was flooded with tributes celebrating de Haart’s life and commitment to his community. One commenter wrote, “You were definitely one in a million,” while another expressed the profound sense of loss felt by many: “He was an awesome accountant, and he will be terribly missed. Fly high dear Erik.”
A Valued Colleague
In addition to his contributions to the rugby community, Erik de Haart was also a respected professional. He was a partner at CTBS Partners, where he was described as “adored by his colleagues and clients.” His commitment to excellence and service left a lasting impression on those who had the pleasure of working with him.
As tributes continue to pour in, Erik de Haart is remembered not only for his heroism during one of Australia’s darkest days but also for his unwavering spirit and dedication to the people around him. His legacy will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of many.
