Bali International Airport Introduces Smarter Baggage Screening System to Reduce Queue Times
Bali, Indonesia — In a significant upgrade aimed at enhancing the travel experience for millions of visitors, Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali has implemented a new, more efficient baggage screening system that has notably cut down passenger queue times. The system, which began operation in July 2025, leverages advanced technology and optimized processes to streamline passenger flow and boost airport security.
Shift in Baggage Screening Process
One of the notable changes is the relocation of checked baggage inspection from the terminal entrance directly to the airline check-in counters. This adjustment allows for earlier detection and screening of hold luggage and reduces congestion at the terminal entry points. Meanwhile, hand luggage is now exclusively screened at the security checkpoint, simplifying the passenger journey.
General Manager Ahmad Syaugi Shahab emphasized that this strategic shift was designed to minimize interaction points that typically slow down the passage of travelers. "By moving hold baggage screening closer to the check-in stage, we reduce bottlenecks and speed up the entire process," Shahab highlighted.
Cutting-Edge Technology for Enhanced Security
To support this new process, the airport has installed Multi-View Dual-Energy X-ray (MVXR) machines in the Hold Baggage Screening Check Point (HBSCP) area. These state-of-the-art scanners offer superior detection capabilities for dangerous and prohibited items compared to previous equipment, providing both heightened security and greater accuracy.
After the initial inspection at check-in, passengers and their cabin baggage undergo a single, thorough screening at the Passenger Security Check Point before entering the departure lounge. This streamlined approach aligns with international aviation safety standards, as outlined in Annex 17 Doc 8973 amendments and Indonesia’s National Aviation Security Program under Ministerial Decree KM 39 of 2024. ### Handling Increased Passenger Traffic
Ngurah Rai International Airport manages an average of around 31,000 travelers daily, with figures soaring to approximately 60,000 during peak seasons and religious holidays. The new screening system is expected to maintain smooth operations even during these busy periods.
Shahab also called on passengers to cooperate with airport and airline personnel and to refrain from carrying prohibited items such as power banks, lithium batteries, and electronic cigarettes. "Flight safety is the responsibility of all of us," he stated.
Enhanced Accessibility Services
In addition to the baggage screening upgrade, Bali’s airport has been advancing its accessibility features to accommodate travelers with special needs. Improvements include priority seating, wheelchair assistance, accessible restrooms, a Special Needs Counter, as well as dedicated drop-off and pick-up zones for passengers requiring additional support.
