Australian Tourist Shares Humorous Encounter with Mischievous Monkeys in Bali

August 11, 2025 | Jakarta — Tourists visiting Bali are often warned about the island’s playful and sometimes audacious monkeys, but one Australian visitor recently recounted a cheeky raid that left her room in complete disarray. Jazz Walsh, an office worker from Sydney, found herself at the center of a monkey mischief incident while staying at a luxury villa in Uluwatu, Bali.

Monkey Mayhem at a Luxury Villa

While Walsh was enjoying a relaxing massage, a curious monkey reportedly entered her villa through an open bathroom window. The mischievous primate took full advantage of the opportunity, rummaging through her belongings and scattering items across the floor. A resort staff member captured the chaos in a video message and sent it to Walsh, showing headphones thrown out the window and other personal items turned upside down.

In the video Walsh later shared on TikTok, the room was clearly in disarray, confirming the monkey’s adventurous intrusion. Despite the disruption, Walsh maintained a lighthearted perspective. "Good afternoon, madam. I think a monkey [has come] through your room," a staff member’s voice noted in the video. Walsh revealed that her AirPods had been taken from their case, which was left behind, further highlighting the playful yet troublesome nature of the local wildlife.

A Lighthearted Reaction

Despite the mess, Walsh remained unfazed and amused by the visit. “Those silly cheeky Bali monkeys,” she captioned her video, adding that the incident was more funny than frustrating. Speaking with Perth Now, she expressed no intention of changing her travel plans because of the experience.

"The incident definitely won’t stop me from returning to Bali. You’re in the monkeys’ home environment, so it’s something you have to be mindful of. We thought the incident was very funny and quite cute,” Walsh said. After the episode, she moved to a nearby mountain resort but still recommended the original villa to followers, praising its location near Bingin Beach, spacious terraces, lush gardens, and scenic cliff-side restaurant.

Not the First of Its Kind

Walsh’s experience mirrors earlier reports from other tourists. Last year, British visitor Sylvia shared a similar story after staying at the same villa. In her review on The Good Observer blog, she warned guests to always secure doors and windows. Sylvia recounted how monkeys had even stolen lightbulbs from her terrace, calling their antics audacious yet amusing.

She advised: “I locked myself in and watched them having fun in my pool and everywhere on the terrace! They’re funny, but make sure you don’t leave anything outside and always lock everything up.”

Embracing Bali’s Wildlife with Caution

Bali’s monkeys, particularly those around Uluwatu, are famous for their playful and sometimes cheeky behavior. While their antics can add a memorable twist to vacations, tourists are reminded to exercise caution and respect the natural habitats of local wildlife.

For travelers planning to visit Bali, these stories offer a glimpse into the island’s lively animal encounters—part risk, part charm—that make the destination uniquely vibrant.

Travelers are also encouraged to keep windows and doors securely closed, especially in villas located near forested or cliff areas where monkeys roam freely.
