The Angeline movie has hit theaters

Share This Post:

The film inspired by the real-life story of an eight-year-old’s horrifying murder in Bali has hit theaters and no surprise, the trailer looks dark and depressing as hell.

Engeline, also known as Angeline, was found dead and buried in her adopted family’s backyard in June 2015, several weeks after the family had reported her missing.

Engeline’s story captivated the nation and her tragic case became an obsession amongst the Indonesian public.

This March, Engeline’s adopted mother Margriet was sentenced to a life term for the girl’s murder, while the family’s former pembantu, Agus, got a 10-year sentence for his role in the killing.

Abuse allegations were a reoccurring theme in the murder investigation and trial, and seem to be a huge part of the film, which also appears to focus on the lead-up to the girl’s death.

Currently, the film titled ‘Untuk Angeline’ (For Angeline), is now playing at just one bioskop in Bali: Kuta’s Park 23 XXI. Just to warn you, the film’s style seems nothing short of a telenovla/sinetron so don’t go in expecting Academy Award winning performances and shots.

Despite initial pushback from the Bali government, which argued the film would cast Bali in a negative light, the film was apparently allowed to go through.
