What Is Special Economic Zone or KEK?

A special economic zone (SEZ) is an area in a country that has different and more favorable economic regulations than other regions in the same country. SEZs are created to attract foreign direct investment, promote trade, and stimulate economic growth and development. SEZs may offer various incentives and benefits to investors, such as tax exemptions, visa facilitation, and currency exchange.

Some examples of SEZs in Indonesia are KEK Sanur, KEK Mandalika, and KEK Kendal. These SEZs focus on health and tourism, sports and entertainment, and manufacturing and logistics, respectively.

The Development of KEK Sanur

KEK Sanur is a special economic zone for health and tourism in Bali, Indonesia. It was approved by the National Council of Special Economic Zones, led by the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, on July 22, 2022. It was officially established by the Government Regulation No. 41 of 2022 on the Special Economic Zone of Sanur on November 1, 2022

The Minister envisions that by the year 2030, a segment comprising 4% to 8% of the Indonesian population, equivalent to 123,000 to 240,000 individuals currently seeking medical treatment abroad, will have the opportunity to receive medical care in Sanur. Over the projected period until 2045, it is anticipated that the total foreign exchange savings will amount to Rp. 86 trillion, contributing an additional Rp. 19.6 trillion to the National Economy.

The SEZ in Sanur is planned to showcase various medical and tourism initiatives, encompassing hospitals, clinics, hotel accommodations, an ethnomedicinal botanical garden, MICE facilities (meeting, incentive, conference, and exhibition), and a commercial center. The designated land area for the Sanur SEZ is estimated to be 41.26 hectares, with anticipated investments totaling Rp. 10.2 trillion.
