The Tourism Ministry, in cooperation with the World Surf League (WSL) and a number of provincial administrations, is planning to hold 11 world-class surfing competitions in Indonesia in 2019.

According to kompas.com, the head of the ministry’s marine tourism acceleration team, Dwisuryo Indroyono Soewilo, said on Monday that the competitions would be held in different parts of Indonesia, in the hopes of making the country the number one surfing destination in the world.

“Indonesia has hundreds of beaches for surfing, 30 of which are considered world-class spots,” he said. “Out of the 30, WSL [events] will be held at 11 beaches in 2019.”

This year, WSL has held six surfing events in Indonesia, out of the 10 that were planned.

“The best way to be a world-class surfing destination is by hosting an annual WSL competition,” Indroyono said, adding that the events guaranteed that an area would see a boost in income and international exposure.

Bali Tourism Agency head AA Gede Yuniarta Putra said he did not expect the event to have such a big impact.

“The hotels from Gianyar to Klungkung were fully booked in an instant,” he said. “It’s interesting to know that the participants brought along their families, teammates, partners, and fans.”
