More Than 100 Aftershocks Recorded After 7.0 Lombok Earthquake, Including 5.4 Quake

Aftershocks have been pulsing from around Lombok after a 7.0 earthquake rocked the Indonesian island on Sunday night, leaving at least 82 dead and hundreds more injured. Over a 100 aftershocks have been recorded as of Monday morning.

Among the aftershocks was a 5.4 earthquake that hit from northwestern Lombok. The 5.4 quake struck at 8:28 am Bali time at a depth of 10 kilometers and did not trigger a tsunami warning, according to the country’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). So far, there have been 132 aftershocks resulting from last night’s 7.0 earthquake, BMKG tweeted Monday morning.

The 7.0 quake struck Sunday evening at 7:46pm, Bali time. Of the deaths on record resulting from Sunday’s quake, the majority have been in northern Lombok, according to Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB). Thousands in Lombok have been forced to evacuate.

Meanwhile in Bali, where the quake could also be felt strongly, damage has been extensive. Footage has quickly gone viral of structures collapsing and rubble raining down. Although the Bali airport suffered some damage, Ngurah Rai International is still operating normally, as is Lombok’s main airport in Mataram.

The 7.0 earthquake comes just a week after a 6.8 was also recorded off Lombok’s northeastern coast, which killed at least 17 people and forced some 5,000 people to evacuate.
