Magnitude 5.0 Earthquake Rattles Bali

This morning (Thursday, 9 November), an earthquake has occurred with magnitude 5.0 SR, 11 km NorthEast of Karangasem, Bali around 6 am local time (21:54:18 UTC). Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics reported that the earthquake occurred at 10 km depth. No tsunami threat.

The 5-10 seconds duration earthquake felt not only in Karangasem, but also other regions in Bali such as Bangli, Klungkung, Gianyar, Denpasar, dan Badung. There are also reports that the tremor also hits Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara province.

Weaker aftershock of 2.4 SR also recorded by BMKG at 06.11 am Central Indonesia Time. The epicenter is also at NorthEast of Karangasem, 13 km deep.

Still related to the volcanic activity of Mount Agung, the earthquake caused panic to many residents in the nearby area.

“It is related to the activity of Mount Agung. The location (of the earthquake) is in the North valley of Mount Agung, 12 to 13 km from the summit” as stated by Devy Kamil Syahbana, an official of Center of Vulcanology and Mitigation of Geological Disaster (PVMBG: Pusat Vulkanologi dan Mitigasi Bencana Geologi).

He added that the earthquake is classified as local tectonic earthquake.

Even though volcanic earthquake of Mount Agung is decreasing, but the local tectonic earthquake indicates that volcanic activity of Mount Agung is not yet normal and still stores a great energy.
