In accordance with Bali Governor Regulation No. 99 of 2018, Bali supermarkets, hotels and restaurants must now promote and prioritize local produce, sourced from farms and fisheries on the island. The policy was inaugurated on Monday, and stipulates that 60 percent of the agricultural products bought, sold and marketed by retailers and hoteliers must come from local suppliers, as reported by Bali Post.
At the inauguration of the new regulation in Pengotan, Bangli, on Monday, Governor Wayan Koster spoke about his vision to boost Bali’s farming, fishing and handicraft industries by synergizing them with the already booming tourism sector.
“There is a big imbalance [in economic growth]. Bali relies on the tourism sector. If tourism is disrupted, all life is disrupted. Therefore, it is necessary to balance the structures of tourism and agriculture,” said Koster, as quoted by Nusa Bali.
A further condition calls for retailers to buy the aforementioned produce at a price of at least 20 percent above the farmers’ production costs, thus supporting the interests of local industries.
“I appeal to entrepreneurs and other economic players who carry out their business activities in Bali to position and portray themselves accompanied by a responsibility to ‘build Bali’ instead of ‘building in Bali,’ said Koster at Monday’s inauguration.
Moving forward, Bali Provincial Government plans to award those parties that consistently cooperate with the new regulation, as well as imposing sanctions for violations. A dedicated team has already been formed to monitor the implementation.
