As part of Jakarta’s 491st anniversary celebration that fell on June 22, the Jakarta Tourism and Culture Agency has made administration-managed museums accessible for free on Tuesday. Below is the list of museums that are free to enter today, as compiled by kompas.com:
Fatahillah Museum. Also known as the Jakarta History Museum, this museum is located at Taman Fatahillah No. 1 in West Jakarta. It is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Shadow Puppet Museum. This museum collects different types of shadow puppets from across the archipelago. It is situated at Jl. Pintu Besar Utara No. 27, West Jakarta. Its operational hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Fine Arts and Ceramics Museum. Open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Fine Arts and Ceramics Museum is located at Jl. Pos Kota No. 2, Kota Tua in West Jakarta, near the Fatahillah and Shadow Puppet museums.
Maritime Museum. Nestled in Penjaringan, North Jakarta, the Maritime Museum gathers objects related to the country’s maritime history, including several types of traditional boats. It also hosts a unique building and tower that had witnessed the glory of the Dutch East Indies Company (VOC). It is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Textile Museum. Those interested in discovering more about the history of Indonesian textile can visit this place at Jl. K. S. Tubun, Petamburan, in West Jakarta. It is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Joang ’45 Museum. Joang ’45 Museum in Menteng, Central Jakarta, is home to historical artefacts related to the time when the youth urged Sukarno, Indonesia’s first president, and Moh. Hatta, the first vice president, to deliver the Proclamation of Indonesian Independence. It is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
H. Thamrin Museum. Also known as Gedung Mohammad Hoesni Thamrin, this building has witnessed the birth of political thought giving rise to Indonesia’s struggle toward independence. Open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., it is said that the concept of Indonesia Raya, the national anthem, was first heard here instrumentally.
Taman Prasasti Museum. A solemn mood will capture each visitor upon stepping into this museum. It collects headstones from the past and other related objects, including coffins and mausoleums. It is located at Jl. Tanah Abang No. 1, South Petojo, in Central Jakarta. The operational hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The National Monument . Visitors are allowed to enter different parts of the National Monument (Monas), area, such as the entrance gate, National History Museum, Proclamation Room and its cawan (grail). However, the monument’s elevator to the top is currently under maintenance and therefore closed to the public.
