Indonesia was among participants of the Paris Tropical Carnival, an annual cultural parade that enlivened the French capital on the first weekend of July.  The Indonesian delegates involved representatives from the Indonesia Diaspora Network in France, supported by the Indonesia Embassy in Paris along with other groups such as the Franco-Indonesian Family Association (IKFI) and Batak groups Bona Pasogit, Puspa Warna and Sekar Jagat, as reported by kompas.com.

Indonesian participants wore an array of traditional attire from various regions while walking down the famed Champs-Elysees on Sunday. Nina Hanafi, head of the Indonesian Diaspora Network France, said Indonesia was the only Asian country that participated in the carnival this year titled “Paris, capital of the arts”, which involved 2,500 people that made up the 36 groups involved in the entire event.

Tropical Carnival is the city’s well-established celebrations of tropical Caribbean life organized by the Paris City Hall together with the Federation of the Paris Tropical Carnival. With an emphasis on music and dance, the event involves groups from France and the Antilles, as well as some countries from other regions.

Nina expressed pride in Indonesia’s involvement in the carnival, which this year held its 17th installment and drew some 200,000 tourists to the boulevard. The Indonesian group consisted of 120 people, including 36 dancers from the Dian Nuswantoro University in Semarang, who all wore batik for their performance.

“This is the second event promoting Indonesian culture in Paris within the past few months, after the success of the event ‘Indonesia: A Fascinating Journey’ at the Louvre Museum in May,” said Nina, who also owns Indonesian restaurant Djakarta-Bali.
