Asia’s largest cruise ship, Quantum of the Seas, is set to return to South-East Asia for a six-month season, from 2019 to 2020. In a recent announcement, international cruise brand Royal Caribbean said that this longest ever deployment in the region for a ship of its class will enable Quantum of the Seas to bring hundreds of thousands of tourists to Malaysia.
Out of the cruise ship’s 34 sailings from Singapore during the six-month period from November 2019 to April 2020, 27 will visit Malaysia, making a total of 43 calls to Port Klang and Penang. That would make around 190,000 tourist arrivals for both ports combined.
Her itineraries include four-night cruises to Penang or Phuket; five-night cruises to Kuala Lumpur (Port Klang), Penang, and Phuket: a seven-night cruise to KL (Port Klang), Penang, and Phuket; and a seven-night cruise to Bangkok (Laem Chabang), and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.
According to Royal Caribbean managing director for Asia Pacific Sean Treacy, the Quantum of the Seas will be refurbished in a multi-million dollar project before her return to South-East Asia. Treacy said that over the years, Malaysia has grown to be one of the region’s most significant cruise destinations, and the growth is expected to continue.
“Each port-of-call here is unique. Penang is rich in cultural and gastronomical attractions, and Kuala Lumpur offers attractive shopping and cultural options,” he said.
What is special about the 18-deck high, 168,666 gross registered ton Quantum of the Seas?
According to Treacy, one of the things that will catch your eye immediately when you board the ship is North Star, a remarkable observation capsule that rises 92m over the ocean. The cruise ship, which can carry 4,905 guests, also offers Two70, an entertainment venue; the Bionic Bar with robot bartenders; skydiving and surfing experiences; interior virtual balconies with real-time ocean views; and SeaPlex, the largest indoor sports and entertainment complex at sea, housing a basketball court, roller-skating, bumper cars, and more.
There are also extensive choices for gourmands with 18 restaurant venues offering cuisines from around the globe, including imaginative cuisine at Wonderland, and Jamie’s Italian by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.
