Eight in Bali and East Java Die in Landslides

Eight people died in two separate landslides in Gianyar regency in Bali and Pacitan regency in East Java on Friday and Saturday, the disaster mitigation agency reported.

The Gianyar Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported on Saturday that the four were a mother and her three children, while the father was in critical condition. They were identified as Ni Made Lintang Ayu Widmerti, 31, Ni Putu Deta Via Larasati, 6, Ni Made Adin Radita Paguna, 3, and Nyoman Ali Anggaran Paguna, 2.

Lintang’s husband, Made Oktara Paguna, 30, is under intensive care at Sanglah General Hospital. Anak Agung Digjaya, the head of the BPBD in Gianyar, said the victims were crushed under the rubble. His team was retrieving the bodies but found the process challenging.

Earlier on Friday, four people died after heavy rain that hit Pacitan caused floods and landslides, the BPBD reported. The agency’s spokesperson, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said 236 people were displaced and four died because of the landslide.

“The National Search and Rescue Agency is still working to retrieve the bodies,” he said on Saturday.

Sutopo said a river overflowed and the water began to enter three villages, namely Purwoasri village, Kayen village, Kebonagung village, with a water level of between 30 and 50 cm on Friday. He said several houses in Kebonagung village and Pacitan had been damaged. More than 200 personnel were involved in handling the disaster.
