East Bali Set to Become the Island’s Premier Tourist Destination by 2025
Ambitious Tourism Goals for Karangasem Regency
As Bali continues to attract millions of visitors from across the globe, East Bali, specifically the Karangasem Regency, is gearing up to potentially emerge as the island’s next tourist hotspot by 2025. Local leaders have set ambitious targets, aiming to welcome 1.5 million tourists in the coming year—a goal that, while bold, is deemed highly achievable given the region’s rich offerings and growing popularity.
In the backdrop of an anticipated 6.5 to 7 million international tourist arrivals across Bali in 2025, tourism in East Bali is on the cusp of a significant boom. The Karangasem Regency is already experiencing noteworthy interest, having hosted approximately 1.03 million international visitors and 250,000 domestic tourists in 2024.
Wayan Kariasa, Chairman of the Karangasem Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI), shared insights on expected tourist trends and the importance of data-driven targets for the region’s tourism sector. He expressed optimism, stating, “Hopefully, the trend of tourists to Karangasem will increase, and this hope is in line with the commitment of the elected Karangasem Regent to pay great attention to the progress of Karangasem Tourism.”
Addressing Challenges and Environmental Concerns
With growth comes responsibility, and the regency government is actively addressing several concerns including traffic congestion, waste management, and land development. Ensuring that East Bali remains an attractive destination for visitors requires a comprehensive approach to sustainable tourism practices. Kariasa highlighted ongoing conservation initiatives at Candidasa Beach that aim to preserve the area’s beauty while promoting tourism. These efforts are expected to be completed over the next two years.
Moreover, the local government underscores the importance of law enforcement to maintain compliance with existing regulations. This follows recent events, including the closure of the PARQ Ubud residential complex and the arrest of its founder related to illegal land conversion, which has rejuvenated discussions about responsible development in Bali.
A Rich Tapestry of Attractions for Travelers
For visitors looking to explore the wonders of Karangasem Regency in 2025, there are countless adventures awaiting. The majestic Mount Agung, picturesque Candidasa Beach, and the renowned diving sites at Amed are just a few highlight attractions.
Travelers seeking cultural immersion and natural beauty away from Bali’s bustling resort areas may find the serene village of Sidemen a perfect alternative to Ubud. With its lush rice terraces, idyllic bamboo treehouses, and cascading waterfalls, Sidemen offers a tranquil escape.
On the eastern coast, Candidasa beckons with its pristine white sand beaches and luxurious accommodations. Boutique hotels such as Ashyana Candidasa Resort, Puri Bagus Candidasa Dive Resort Yoga Retreat, and Sagara Candidasa promise guests stunning ocean views, easy beach access, and warm Balinese hospitality.
Cultural Heritage Awaits Exploration
Karangasem Regency is equally rich in cultural heritage with several must-visit attractions. At the top of the cultural bucket list is the Penataran Agung Lempuyang Temple, popularly known as the Gates of Heaven Temple, which offers stunning views and a glimpse into Bali’s spiritual history.
Another significant site is the Tirta Gangga Water Palace and Gardens. This beloved attraction has recently expanded with the addition of the Asta Gangga Museum, which showcases the cultural legacy of the 14th King of Karangasem and is home to important artifacts, including traditional textiles and heirloom keris.
As East Bali sets its sights on a thriving future, it stands ready to welcome tourists, digital nomads, and expats alike. With its unspoiled landscapes, rich cultural offerings, and dedication to sustainable tourism, Karangasem Regency is poised to become a top choice for travelers looking to experience the authentic charm of Bali.
