Chester Bennington, the Linkin Park lead singer whose screeching vocals helped the rock-rap band become one of the most commercially successful acts in the 2000s, was found dead in his home near Los Angeles on Thursday. He was 41.

Los Angeles Coroner spokesman Brian Elias said authorities were investigating Bennington’s death, which was first broken by the website TMZ, as an apparent suicide at Palos Verdes Estates, but no additional details were available.

His death was reportedly caused by hanging, according to TMZ.

His suicide was a shock to bandmates because the group had plans for a photo shoot in Hollywood just hours after the Linkin Park singer was found hanging at his home.

The band also has plans to tour in 1 week, which made the suicide all the more shocking.

Band co-founder and producer Mike Shinoda said on Twitter he was “shocked and saddened.”

Dave Farrell, the bassist, simply tweeted: “Heartbroken”.

“Chester Bennington was an artist of extraordinary talent and charisma, and a human being with a huge heart and a caring soul. Our thoughts and prayers are with his beautiful family, his band-mates and his many friends,” Warner Bros. Records CEO and Chairman Cameron Stang said in a statement. The singer’s passing has caused shockwaves around the music industry. He was known as one of the pioneers of the nu-metal genre.

Linkin Park also released a new video just hours before reports of Bennington’s death emerged.

“Talking To Myself” was released at 9.01am, reportedly just minutes after Bennington’s body was discovered at a private residence in Palos Verdes Estates.

The song was a single released from the band’s album One More Light, which came out in May 2017.

Comprised of video clips from the band’s live shows, it features several shots of Bennington himself performing onstage.
