Rising Thefts Targeting Tourists in Bali Attract Concern from Officials

Bali, Indonesia – An alarming increase in thefts and robberies targeting tourists in Bali’s popular travel hotspots has raised concerns among travelers and local authorities alike. Visitors are now urged to exercise heightened vigilance as instances of criminal activity become more frequent in the island’s premier resort areas.

Anti-Thug Initiative Launched by Governor

In response to the rising tide of crime, Governor Wayan Koster has introduced his Anti-Thug Team, an initiative designed to enhance security measures throughout the island. This announcement follows several high-profile thefts, including a recent incident involving a 60-year-old tourist from Saudi Arabia, identified by his initials EKA. EKA was the victim of a drive-by robbery in Seminyak, a well-known tourist district.

On the evening of June 9, 2025, shortly after 9:30 PM, EKA was approached by a thief who cornered him on Badangkasa Street. The suspect, driving a motorcycle, grabbed the victim’s bag and sped away, leaving EKA distressed and in need of assistance. Authorities have emphasized the importance of swiftly reporting any criminal incidents to help enhance security efforts.

Increasing Reports of Tourist-targeted Robberies

This incident is one of many reported in recent months, highlighting a troubling pattern of thefts in Bali. Just last week, Kuta Police confirmed the arrest of a local man for robbing a tourist from Oman using a similar method. The suspect targeted the tourist by driving behind him multiple times before committing the robbery.

Badung Police Chief AKBP M Arif Batubara explained that the suspect, who has been identified by his initials GA, proactively monitored his victim’s behavior before executing the theft. GA was charged with theft and is now facing a potential nine-year prison sentence.

Patterns of Criminal Activity

The distinct modus operandi of these incidents typically involves a lone perpetrator on a motorcycle attacking unsuspecting tourists, particularly those adorned with valuables or electronics. Recently, on June 2, another report surfaced involving a Spanish tourist in Uluwatu who was similarly targeted by two men on a motorbike. In this case, the thieves tricked the victim into letting her guard down before making off with her belongings.

Local police have been actively investigating these complaints. However, inconsistencies in reports have emerged, with some incidents not being officially recorded, raising questions about the true extent of the problem.

As Bali continues to strive for safety in its key tourist sectors, visitors are advised to prioritize their safety by utilizing taxis or pre-arranged transportation, especially during nighttime hours.
