Police Crackdown Highlights Risks for Bali Tourists on Scooters

Bali, Indonesia – Authorities in Bali are intensifying their efforts to enforce traffic regulations amid growing concerns about the behavior of tourists renting scooters on the island. This crackdown comes as police aim to address the illegal practices observed during a recent operations targeting reckless driving by locals and visitors alike.

Growing Concerns Over Road Safety

The popular mode of transport among tourists, scooters are not only viewed as a thrilling way to explore Bali but also as a practical solution to the island’s notorious traffic congestion. However, the Bali police have issued a stern warning to potential renters, emphasizing that it is the responsibility of drivers to adhere to local road rules, including possessing the appropriate licenses.

During a comprehensive three-day operation from May 1 to May 3, officers confiscated 56 scooters and issued citations to 81 riders, 30 of whom were identified as tourists. The operation specifically targeted well-known tourist areas such as Canggu, Uluwatu, Kuta, and Seminyak.

Notable Violations by Tourists

According to Badung Police Chief AKBP M Arif Batubara, many tourists were found to be lacking essential vehicle documents. He noted that the majority of these offenders were not wearing helmets, lacked valid driver’s licenses, and were using motorcycles that had been modified for excessive noise.

“Most of the foreigners who are [pulled over] do not wear helmets, do not have a driver’s license, and carry motorcycles with the noise of the brong (non-standard) exhaust,” stated Batubara. He underscored the urgency of the situation, affirming that such irresponsible behavior disrupts traffic order and safety.

Legal Requirements for Foreign Tourists

Under Indonesian law, tourists wishing to operate scooters must have an Australian motorbike license, a valid international driving permit, and travel insurance. Helmets are mandatory for both operators and passengers. Rental agencies, while often lenient, are still required to provide proper documentation with every vehicle, including insurance and roadworthy certificates.

The necessity for stricter enforcement comes as data from Southern Cross Travel Insurance indicated that scooter-related accidents have become a leading source of insurance claims among Bali travelers. The insurance provider recorded 21 claims in March, including incidents resulting in hospitalizations.

For those who choose to rent scooters in Bali, local authorities offer several safety recommendations:

1. Wear a Helmet: Compliance with the law and safeguarding personal safety should be a priority.

2. Obtain an International Driver’s License: While many rental shops may allow rentals without this document, tourists risk fines if caught.
