Bali Considers New Entry Rules Requiring Tourists to Show Proof of Funds
Bali, Indonesia — As Bali continues to attract millions of tourists annually and remains a top travel destination in 2026, local authorities are proposing new regulations aimed at managing overtourism and promoting a more sustainable travel environment. The Bali Provincial Government is finalizing plans to require foreign visitors to present proof of financial means upon entry.
Under the draft rules, travelers may need to provide recent bank statements covering the past three months as evidence of sufficient funds to support their stay. Visitors would also be required to show confirmed return tickets and detailed travel plans. These measures are intended to assure that tourists are financially prepared, discouraging irresponsible behaviors and supporting what officials describe as “high-quality tourism.”
Governor Wayan Koster indicated that failure to meet these requirements could result in denied entry or deportation. The policy would apply to tourists of all nationalities. However, specific financial thresholds or exact amounts visitors must demonstrate have not yet been finalized.
This proposal comes in response to a record-breaking tourism year in 2025, when Bali welcomed over 7 million international tourists, an increase of more than 11 percent compared to the previous year. The island is simultaneously considering other measures such as banning private beaches to improve public access and alleviate pressure on natural resources.
The new regulation is still under consideration within Bali’s local legislative process and has not yet been officially enforced. Should it become law, visitors can expect the requirements to take effect later in 2026. Bali remains a beloved destination, but these steps underscore efforts to balance the island’s popularity with long-term environmental and social sustainability.
