Pura Luhur Lempuyang Temple to Temporarily Close to Tourists for Ceremonies

In a significant announcement for travelers visiting Bali, the Pura Luhur Lempuyang Temple, popularly known as the Gates of Heaven, will be closed to tourists from April 23 to April 27, 2025. This closure is to facilitate important religious ceremonies held at the temple, located in the Karangasem Regency of Bali.

Significance of the Pura Luhur Lempuyang Temple

The Pura Luhur Lempuyang Temple is not only a renowned tourist attraction but also a site of immense spiritual importance for Balinese Hindus. Known for its breathtaking views of Mount Agung through its iconic gates, the temple has become a sought-after destination for travelers from across the globe. In recent years, it has gained recognition through social media, with many influencers sharing stunning photographs taken between the temple’s gates.

Closure for Ceremonial Activities

Nyoman Jati, the Head of Purwayu Traditional Village, confirmed the details of the upcoming closure, emphasizing that the period will allow local worshippers to focus on their prayers and rituals. "Our tourist visits are close so that the people can focus on doing their prayers," Jati stated. He also noted that travel agents and tour guides have been informed about the closure and will adjust their itineraries accordingly.

The temple will resume normal operations for tourists on April 28, 2025. It is worth mentioning that visitors of all faiths are required to adhere to a strict dress code when entering any temple in Bali, which includes wearing a sarong and sash, along with a modest top. Many temples provide these garments for rent as part of the entry fee.

Other Temple Closures and Restrictions

In addition to the temporary closure of Pura Luhur Lempuyang Temple, travelers to Bali should also be aware that Mount Agung is closed to the public until May 3, 2025. This restriction is in place to allow for various ceremonies associated with the Ida Bhatara Turun Kabeh, during which traditional rituals are performed to honor the gods.

Access to Mount Agung has been strictly prohibited since April 6, with local authorities emphasizing the importance of keeping the area clear for spiritual activities. Jro Mangku Widiartha, the Head of Besakih Traditional Village, stated, "We are closing this climbing activity to minimize things that we do not want during the work. We have decided to temporarily close the climbing routes to Mount Agung."

Failing to adhere to this closure may result in legal repercussions, including deportation and penalties for foreign visitors.

Alternatives for Tourists

While the Pura Luhur Lempuyang Temple and Mount Agung are off-limits during this period, other attractions such as Mount Batur remain accessible for tourists. Visitors can engage in trekking, jeep tours, and scenic sunrise experiences, making arrangements through local tour guides as per standard regulations.
