-Video footage of the hotel has emerged, showing a once luxurious complex
-The resort boasts a ballroom, large terraces, ensuite rooms and views
-Legend has it that the hotel is haunted by workers who died at the site
Bali is famous as a holiday destination for surf, sand and sea.
But some holidaymakers heading to the Indonesian island of Gods are making a pilgrimage of a different kind – visiting an abandoned luxury hotel locals believed to be haunted.
The Ghost Palace Hotel, or Bedugul Taman Rekreasi Hotel & Resort, is located on the mountains in the central highlands of Bedugal, 50km north of Kuta.
Video footage shot by traveller Jacob Laukaitis and uploaded to YouTube shows a luxurious but crumbling hotel complex complete with a large ballroom, massive dinning rooms, ensuite bedrooms, countless overgrown terraces and spectacular scenic views.
In another room, a pair of flip flops – an eerie sign of life long gone – lay abandoned.
The expansive property was built in the 1990s and, for reasons unknown to this day, never opened to the public.
It is believed the resort has been abandoned for a decade.
Mystery surrounds the hotel’s construction as well as its ownershop – with some people claiming it was built by a member of Indonesian royalty while others point to Tommy Suharto, son of the late president Suharto.
Another theory suggests the Ghost Palace Hotel is owned by a corrupt developer who placed a curse on his competitors, but instead ended up bankrupt.
Whoever the owner is, it is clear they had ambitious plans for what was obviously intended to have been a grand resort or getaway for the affluent.
‘I discovered a massive abandoned hotel in Bali and spent hours exploring it,’ Mr Laukaitis, founder of coupon website Chameleon John, wrote when he uploaded his video on YouTube.
‘Locals call it “The Ghost Palace Hotel”,’ he said referring to the folklore that the hotel is haunted by rivals businessmen and the overworked labourers who died at the site while building the resort.
