Total Power Blackout Strikes Bali, Leaving Island in Darkness
Bali, Indonesia – May 2, 2025 – The popular tourist destination of Bali has been plunged into darkness following a total power outage that began at 4 p.m. local time. Residents and visitors alike are currently facing significant disruptions as the national electric provider, PT PLN, works to restore power across the island.
Initial Cause and Recovery Efforts
According to PT PLN Manager Wayan Eka Susana, the blackout appears to be linked to a fault in the Java-Bali transfer cable. Susana confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the exact nature of the failure. “Currently, the recovery is being carried out in stages by officers in the field. We will provide information on developments periodically,” he stated in comments to reporters.
As of 7:45 p.m. local time, PLN provided a status update, reporting that electricity supply had been restored to approximately 50 percent of Bali. "Continue to monitor for the latest information on the official PLN UID Bali account. Thank you for your support, prayers, and patience," the statement read.
Impact on Tourism and Local Infrastructure
The blackout has caused substantial chaos, particularly during the busy Friday evening rush hour. The loss of power led to the failure of traffic lights, resulting in gridlock and an increase in accidents on Bali’s highways. Eyewitnesses reported that initial confusion exacerbated the situation as drivers struggled to navigate the traffic-filled streets.
I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport has confirmed that flights are still operating on schedule, although the ongoing situation could lead to potential disruptions in the coming hours. A statement from the airport read, “Please be informed that the disruption to the Java-Bali undersea power cable has affected the electricity supply in Bali, including I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, on Friday, May 2. Currently, all departures and arrivals continue to operate.”
Areas Still Affected
Despite PLN’s gradual recovery efforts, many of Bali’s densely populated areas remain without power. Reports indicate that locations such as Denpasar, South Kuta (including Nusa Dua), and much of Gianyar Regency, which is home to popular tourist spots like Ubud, have not yet seen any restoration.
In light of the ongoing situation, authorities have advised visitors to exercise caution while driving, as traffic signals are non-operational and street lighting is inadequate. Tourists are encouraged to conserve their phone batteries, stay calm, and avoid unnecessary travel. With temperatures rising during the evening, staying hydrated is also recommended.
Emergency Services Remain Available
Emergency services are still operational, and tourists in need of assistance are advised to contact their accommodation providers. For urgent support, they can call the emergency service number in Indonesia, which is 112, or reach out to local law enforcement at 110. The tourist police can be contacted directly at (0361 115 4), and ambulance services are available at 118. Updates on the situation will be regularly posted by PLN Distribusi Bali on their Instagram account. As the power outage situation continues to evolve, both locals and tourists are urged to remain informed and prepared for potential ongoing disruptions.
This is a developing story; updates will follow as more information becomes available.
