Badung Targets Completing Kuta/Seminyak Utility Tunnel by 2020

The Badung government hopes that the construction of 10 kilometers of integrated utility tunnel from Seminyak to Kuta will be complete by 2020. This was conveyed to press by Badung Regent, Nyoman Giri Prasta on Tuesday while evaluating the readiness of the 1.4 kilometers of tunnel already constructed in the Basangkasa area of Seminyak.

Giri Prasta continued that the budget of the tunnel construction came from the Badung District National Construction Plan (PPNSB), and the Regional Middle Term Construction Plan (RPJMD), and the purpose of the construction is to maintain the aesthetics and ethics of the tourism area.

“We did this to maintain the quality tourism. We have planned each section, but we will evaluate the effort from this pilot project. We hope it will increase tourist visits to the area,” he said to tribunnews.com yesterday.

He explained that Seminyak was chosen as the first area of the construction because the cable connectivity of the Sunset Road area will start from Seminyak, then they will continue the construction to Legian and Kuta. After the construction is complete, they will periodically start putting all the cables underground.

“We want all of the overhead cables to be moved underground, and they must complete the process by June. If they cannot meet the deadline, we will remove the remaining cables. So, there will only be street lights above the surface and the cables would be attached to each pole,” he added.

He guaranteed that the tunnel is safe, as any rainwater will be automatically removed by a blower machine and lights have been installed to help the installation and maintenance processes.

The Badung Regent also told reporters that the construction was part of the Badung Public Work (PUPR) Department’s training to construct an MRT in Badung.
