Angkasa Pura Continues to Expand Ngurah Rai International Airport

Share This Post:

The Denpasar airport authority will continue the reclamation of 107 hectares of land from the sea to expand I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport and the project is targeted to be completed in 2022.

PT Angkasa Pura I (Persero) Chief Director, Faik Fahmi, said that his side are committed to do everything to help increase the tourist arrivals to Bali, and the I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport expansion is one of them.

To expand the airport, they will have to reclaim land on the southern side of the airstrip (Kelan, Kedonganan), and it will need approximately 107 hectares in total to expand the airport. The reclamation will be used to extend the runways, expand the aprons and build additional terminals.

“The reclamation will be used for several purposes. We will extend the runways, but we won’t build a second runway,” he said to nusabali.com this week.

He explained that the reclamation had already started before the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in October 2018, where 8 hectares were reclaimed at that time. “We have completed 35 hectares until now and we will complete the first target of 47 hectares soon. Then we will move to the next step to complete the total of 107 hectares,” he added.

Fahmi said that the project is targeted to be complete in 2022. He also said that there are several foreign airplane slots queued until now, because Ngurah Rai Airport is already full.

“When the project is complete, the runway will be extended 400 meters to 3,400 meters, so all types of aircraft will be able to land at Ngurah Rai Airport,” he concluded.
